Front tires wear

I have a 2008 Patriot and comute 200 miles a day. The gas mileage is great, however, I am having to replace tires every 22,000 miles. I have even bought 80,000 mile tires...same thing.
I have found if I rotate them every 5,000 I can get 24,000 miles. I also found if I don't rotate them, I only have to replace the front tires after 20000 miles.
I have 80,000 miles so far...
Any suggusetions?

yikes! 22-24,000 miles on a tire is terrible. I have 40,000 miles on my original tires now and they still look great. Granted, I check/adjust tire pressures once a week and rotate every 6k miles. I also had my alignment done at 20k miles and I'm just about due for another now. Where are the tires wearing out? on the outside edges? on only the inner or outer edge or in the center? When was the last time you had the vehicle aligned?

Check out this chart, it'll help diagnose the tire wear problem:

could be any of the following:

1) alignment - when was the last time you got one?
2) bad joints (which would be found when trying to do an alignment)
3) are you keeping your tires properly inflated?
4) are they balancing the tires when they install the new ones?
5) shop guys are ripping you off by lying to you that the tires are bad

we could narrow down the above 5 causes if you tell us what kind of wear you are experiencing? are you experiencing outer wear, inner wear, center wear, or is the tread evenly wearing out prematurely?

i hope you haven't just been throwing those tires away or giving them back to the shop. if you only get 20K miles out of them, you need to call up the manufacturer and file a warranty claim. you should do that for every tire that wears out prematurely.

just out of curiosity...how often have you had to change your front brake pads? are your rotors constantly warping?

Tires are wearing out even;y prematurely

The first set when new lasted 24000. I bought another set that lasted to 44000. Both of these sets were Goodyear and I rotated every 5-6 thousand miles. I then bought a set of Michelins. This time I did not rotate the tires and the front tires were worn out at 63000. It now has 80000 and the front is worn out again:( The back tires are still in really good shape.

Sounds like alignment?

I am no mechanic, so I appreciate any suggestions that you can give me!

can you describe "wear out" ? inner wear? outer wear? center wear?

My best guess would be excessive toe-in setting then. Are you getting feathering across the tread ribs? (see my link in the 2nd post). It could be possible to have too much toe-in, causing the tires to scrub constantly, but not have a problem with the other alignment angles, or even a counter angle that allows the excess toe to wear evenly. It could also still drive straight or not pull but have excessive toe-in.

I would ask around for a good alignment shop in your area and explain what's happening and have them thoroughly check and set the alignment. You want a good shop for this as they will properly set the angles including centering of values and comparing cross angles (side to side) vs. a cheap tire shop alignment where so long as any of the values are in spec, they leave it.

Let me give you an example, say the toe setting should be 0.0 to -0.5 (each side should measure this). A good alignment shop will set each side to -0.2 with 0 cross value. A cheap shop may read the left @0.0 and the right @-.05 and leave them be (do nothing) as both are in spec but you've got a 0.5 cross value (difference between the left and right).

Odd, I have 50,000 miles on my original tires, and they look like they will pass inspection. Guess I'll find out in a few weeks when the Pat is due.

I change oil every 3K miles and rotate tires every other oil change. Front wheel drive can be tough on tires, but you say you rotate too?? If you don't rotate you will get excess wear and the front tires could cup too.

Could be balance, do they spin balance your tires? Do they torque the nuts on the wheels to the same torque? I think the spec is 100, but I've seen them between 80 and 100. As long as all the same I think it's ok, otherwise you might feel some vibration in the wheel from the front tires, usually it;s at one speed, but fine if above or below that speed. In other front wheel drive vehicles if that occurred I usually felt it around 65 MPH.

I'm sort of stumped here based on the wear being even, but earlier than it should be.

What kind of tires are you buying? Not just brand, but model? What's the mileage rating on them?

If you're wearing out 80,000 mile tires in 22,000 miles, there's a problem. If you're wearing out 30,000 mile tires in that stretch, that's pretty well expected.

Driving style also factors in- if you're hammering the accelerator, braking hard, and carrying lots of speed into turns they'll wear faster.

My stock tires were replaced at 35,000 miles, and they had probably another 10K left in them (were Firestone Affinity), but I could tell they had degraded in capability. The Goodyear Assurance Tripletreds I bought are now at about 15,000 miles, but with very little wear on them- they're noisy, but plenty of tread left. I'd look into some Goodyear Assurance Comfortred tires- they should last a good long time and be much quieter than the Tripletreds.

I have a 2014 Jeep Patriot with still the original tires and am at 22,000 miles and the tire shop says I need new ones. I have rotated these tires at 10,000 miles and at 20,000 miles. I can't believe I need new tires! I will be very upset if the next replacement tires do the same thing! The tires that originally are on it are Firestone. I will get either Michelin or Good Year and hope for the better!

Good excuse to buy something better than the stock tires. Mine was stock with 70 series. At 150 miles I traded them in for General Altimax 225/65-16. Very happy with their performance. A minimal increase in steering effort (which I like). Good info from forum members and Tire Rack site.
