First Oil Change

I am thinking of replacing the oil/filter on my Patriot at 1000 miles. Putting in synthetic Mobile One with PureOne filter. I have some free oil change coupons from dealership but they are about 15 miles away and I really like doing this myself. My question is: 1000 miles too soon? I have heard there is some kind of oil to break in new engine and I don't want to do this if this "special" type oil needs to run for more than 1000 miles. Just looking for some input if this is advisable or not.

I changed mine when the PAT was two weeks old and had 2,000 miles of service. I decided to use M1 0W-30 ($24.50 for 5 qts) and a NAPA Gold filter, FIL 7060 ($6.39 each).

I changed it again at 6K and every 6K since.

Chances are, your change oil message is going to pop up early like most peoples did. My first change indicator went off at 2700 miles. If I were you, I'd wait the extra 1500 miles or so and change it then. At least that way you'll be on the schedule with the change oil light.

My dealership is 10 minutes away so I will do my first few oil changes there since I printed out some $18 mopar oil change special coupons. At least while my warranty is good I will do my first several fluid changes there.

Two questions I have are:
How do you make sure the warranty is still valid when you do an oil change at home? I keep service records of all my vehicles on my own but I don't keep my walmart receipts for oil and filter purchases. What does Jeep/Mopar require for doing home oil changes??

also I almost forgot, is it easy to reset the oil change reminder? Or does it somehow reset on it's own after detecting new clean oil in the system? Not sure how new vehicles work since I'm still used to my 1992 Chrysler. Thanks!

How do you make sure the work was completed correctly when you do an oil change at a dealership?

The OC indicator reset procedure is listed in the OM.

A bell chimes and the words Change Oil show up in the odometer window for a few seconds when it's started. If you use a remote starter, you might not ever see it.

Mine never tripped. My first few oil changes were done at 5.5K or so, then got nice coupons (dealership..w/ free wiper replacements) so I did a couple after 3.5K. Unless is set to pop up after 6K miles, I don't have it. I've never seen the "change oil" lighting up for few secs at start-up, I do see a red dot on top right (which I thought it was alarm or something) which I still not sure what it is for. My car does not have remote starter. Now I am curious..the dealer put a sticker on it saying 6 months or 3K after last oil change, maybe I should wait for more than 6K this time..

I bet the dealer used nice coupon grade oil.

I'm coming up on the one year anniversay of my Pat ownership. Initially I was only using the Pat on weekends so I took it to the dealer for it's first oil change at 6 mos which was about 2500 miles incidentally and no OCI. Over the next 6 mos I put about 5k miles as i was driving it more and my OCI came on at about 7800 miles. I took it to the dealer at about 8k and bought a maintenance package for the next 5 oil changes. They're recommendation was to change the oil at 3 mos or 3k miles whichever comes first. This seems to be NOP for dealers as their mission is to get you in as often as possible. My plan was to do it as the OCI came on or 6 mos whichever comes first which seems more in line with the OM.

Does anyone think 6 mos is too long an interval? I would say that driving conditions here on LI are about average and I'm not especially hard on my engines foot wise. Thank you for your opinions which are appreciated!

Incidentally......

Just thought I'd share this experience FWIW.

My first oil change was done at the dealer closest to me who did not take off the skid plate and consequently presented me the vehicle with oil dripping heavily off the skid plate. I immediately made them clean up the mess which was another annoying wasted 20 minutes of my time.

The second change was done at a different dealer where the service writer explained that they remove the skid plates when changing the oil on vehicles so equipped. Not sure if they did or didn't but there was no dripping afterward. Guess where I'll be getting the oil changed next time, discount package not withstanding. Also, they did reset the OCI.

From the 2011 Patriot OM
Under no circumstances should oil change intervals
exceed 8,000 miles (13 000 km) or six months, whichever
comes first.

From the 2012 Patriot OM
Under no circumstances should oil change intervals
exceed 8,000 miles (13 000 km) or six months, whichever
comes first.

From the 2013 Patriot OM
Under no circumstances should oil change intervals
exceed 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or twelve months,
whichever comes first.

What changed in the engine design to extend the max (read Warranty Coverage) OC interval 2,000 miles/6 months???

don't forget that in Europe the oil change interval is 1 year or I think 18k miles
