ETC and Traction Control Warning light

I have a problem with my jeep patriot 2008, 3 weeks ago the ETC (electronic throttle control) and Traction Control light turn on and I lost engine power, It just ran idle. It can not go more than 2000 RPM. I turn it off and on and was everything ok.

Now it started again with the problem, but turning it off and on does not solve the problem now. The problem is that there are no DTC. just the ETC and the Traction Control warning lights. Without the trouble code, I don't know if is a problem with the body throttle actuator, a sensor, ETC.

I had read a lot of threads, but nobody gives a solution, many of them took the patriot to the dealer, and the dealer started replacing the body throttle, but after some weeks there was a problem again, they changed the ETC, the PCM, and also the wiring.

So I don't know how to troubleshoot this. No check engine light, no codes, just the ETC and Traction Control light, and No Engine Power. I connected a Scanner and did not find anything.

By the way, I live in a warm place, 12-30°C, So I don't think is a freezing problem.

One week ago I removed the body throttle and cleaned. It was so easy to unplug the electrical connector (It should not be). Well after cleaning and installed it again I plug the electrical connector and try to unplug it again, I was not easy to unplug it. Now my patriot is running ok, 10 days without a problem. this doesn't means this is a solution because the first time I got the problem it was solved itself and after 2 weeks it was again. Now the problem is that I dont know if it was a dirty boddy throttle, a loose connector, or the ECU that was reset when I disconnected the battery.

Well, after 3 weeks running perfect my patriot, the problem is back again (two days ago). No power, 2000rpm at maximun, ETC (electronic throttle control) and traction warning lights are on. Check Engine light is off. I connected a OBDII scanner and there are not DTCs. My patriot is at a "limp mode", It is no the throttle pedal because with the scanner I can see how the parameter change when I depress it. and because it is limp mode, the throtle actuator control and throttle position parameters do not change. Today It is running ok, without problems. Suddenly it works great and suddenly it fails. I did not move anything.

Any idea how to troubleshoot this? if it does not send any trouble codes how can I know what is failing. Also Why if the ETC and the traction lights are on, why it does not turn on the check engine light??

There were some folks who had trouble with ESP/BAS systems going haywire and it was a power splice in the wire loom along or near the driver side rocker. It had gotten water in it and corroded. They both fixed it by cutting and re-soldering the wires. You might want to start some wire loom jiggle tests to see if you can track down something similar.

You're in limp mode, that's why your RPM is being limited. The computer knows something is wrong, so to prevent damage, it locks the system down to the bare minimum of functionality.

The computer knows something is wrong, but why it does not set a DTC? Why it doesnt turn on the check engine light?
Two days ago I replaced the throttle body and I took it to the dealer in order to make the ETC Relearn procedure. Now it is working fine. But because it was an intermittent failure I am not sure the the problem was solved replacing the throttle body.

What else can turn on the ETC and the traction lights ?
Could be a wheel sensor?
a brake sensor?

Having same problem with 2014 Dodge Journey.

Here is the solution

You need to read my solution is not any of the above mentioned is one of your ABS sensors and the code is not coming up because you need to scan it with an ABS reader or at the dealer they need to pull the ABS codes

They are robbing you blind because the solution is just a $30 sensor

You nailed it Gab.. i had the same symptoms with no code stored. I've had several episodes of this with my 2007 over the years, and the dealer mechanics would clean the ETC, flash the computer etc, but it was still present intermittently. A few days ago it 'failed hard' and wouldn't go above 2000 rpms. I had removed the hose coming from the air cleaner so I could see the butterfly valve in the throttle body, and the valve did not move when starting or when depressing the gas pedal. Took a chance and replaced the throttle body and it fixed it immediately. I opened the old throttle body and the plastic gears connecting the motor to the butterfly shaft were completely worn out. The computer had probably been trying to compensate for quite some time, but it finally reached a point where it would actuate the motor with no movement at all in the valve. Thanks for your posts!

mine too..

Hi, I want to share some information about ETC, this is what hapened to me.

My Patriot (2007 2.4 limited CVT) have same symptoms, start at last january, ETC light flashing when accelerating hard, and now finally last month engine goes to "limp" mode, no revs above 2000 rpm. No computer resets etc does any good. Also ESP light turns on.

I read these forums, and raising knowledge of my car.
I dissemble air intake manifold, and found "butterfly" valve there. I was 100% sure that it's the cause of problem. But I don't have spareparts here, or Chrysler's computer/software to relearn new valve positions. So I have to take my Pat to local Jeep service.
They check engine codes (was none), also they stated that ETC light might maybe leave some codes to memory. Possible causes was engine computer, throttlevalve, or wiring. Then they finally replace that valve, and now my car is working fine, no ETC flashes or nothing...

This episode costs to me total about 600 euros here in Finland, and I know that throttlevalve costs about 140$ in America, so I think that I have been robbed!

Finland is country for rich people :D

I am haveing the same ETC light flashing along with the ESP light. Limits power to between 1100 and 2000 rpm, Jeep barely moves. I have had it to the dealer 3 times, and no success as of yet. They tried reflashing the computer and it did not work. They they tried to clean the throttle body and this did not help either.

I am not optomistic at this time as to a resolution, but we will see.

I am sure they will try and replace the throttle body next, not sure if it will work or not.

I have 86,000 miles so it will be out of my pocket I am guessing.

WOw, I can't beleive this is still a problem with Jeep patriots. I had this problem back in 2008. It's fixed now, but had been in the dealership 3 weeks during that time because they had a hell of a time trying to fix it.

THey replaced the throttle body, and it seemed to work for only a week or so. Eventually, they replaced the PCM (computer), and I've been problem free *knocks on wood*.

Here's my exp, and what they did to fix it.

Since I replaced the throttle body the problem was fixed. I just pay the spare, and I replaced it, it was easy. But first I talked to the dealer to know if I bought the spare with them they can train the ETC, some of them did not wanted and some does. So I replaced it and took my patriot to the dealer, they connect the computer and train the ETC. I took less than a minute.

Same Problem!

I own a green 2008 Jeep Patriot that I purchased new in 2008. Until this week, I have had no significant problems with the car. On Saturday, the car went into the limit mode accompanied by the ETC light and the ESP light. I "limped" the car home and discovered that turning the car off and then on fixed the problem! Yesterday, the problem returned, again to be fixed by turning the car on and off several times. I am going to investigate the solutions provided in the above threads before I take the car to the dealer for a wallet amputation. Any new news about the problem would be appreciated. I will post my successes or failures. Cheers.

alltoreup1.......any solutions to your problem? I'm having a reoccurring problem where the ETC, ESP and the MIL light comes on in my 2009 Pat. Been to the dealer twice. First time they replaced the ETC, next time they replaced the Cam Sensor. It's sitting in my driveway right now in limp mode and all three lights on. Very frustrating.

Computer Gremlins

Bdub, The problem that I described occurred in early January 2012. After resetting the computer several times (by switching the car off and then on) sometimes several times, the problem went away! Moreover, I've since driven the car extensively, and from Toronto, ON to Savanna, GA and back without any problems! It is hard to believe! The night that I had the initial problem, there was one strange occurrence! I drove about 100 Km (60 miles) from a location where the outside air temperature was 3 degrees Celsius (about 38 deg F) to another location where the outside air temperature was -11 degrees Celsius (about 14 deg F)! The car was turned off at -11C for about two hours and the problem started on the return trip. The weather temperature differential was quite extreme. Whether that was a factor or not, I can't say. However, within a week, the problem was gone. I did no maintenance on the car for this problem. Gremlins! I have heard that if turn on-off doesn't work, disconnecting and reconnecting the battery may work. The only other odd occurrence is also related to the outside temperature gauge. Occasionally it will read, say 8 deg C, and with minutes after driving it will drop by several degrees. This could be due to airflow but I am suspicious that the outside air temperature gauge, that also instructs the computer as to fuel mixture etc etc, may be faulty and that it may have been the source of my original ETC ESP problems. I hope this helps. Good luck.

I'm having the same problem with my 2009. The first tow to the dealer they replaced the throttle pedal. I got all the way home, 40 miles, and all three lights were back on and I'm in limp mode. ETC/ESP and Check Engine light. Towed it back to the dealer yesterday.

The second repair they replaced a Cam Sensor. Drove it two days and it's sitting in my driveway, the same three light are on again and it's in limp mode. They want me to bring it back..........but here comes another tow expense and $100 deductible on my aftermarket warranty. I told the service adviser that throwing parts on the thing isn't going to fix it.

Update: I finally got fed up and bought a scan tool. I checked for codes and found eight stored. I cleared all of the codes so I could drive the Jeep. Then I got a bug and ripped the left side kick panel off and checked the wiring there and along the floor board.......everything looked good. Could not find a connector, so for 2009 Chrysler must have eliminated it. Then I started looking around the left inner fender well from under the hood. I found two wiring looms rubbing on the metal portion of the inner fender. I protected it using large flexible tubing and tie straps. Then I pulled the inner fender down. There i found two more places where wiring was rubbing metal and protected them as well. To date, I have not had any problems. I have put on many miles after the repair. If I happen to see this problem again, I'll update this post. I know what you mean about your outside temp monitor, mine is funny sometimes also.

Hey good to hear that your problem has gone away for a while. My first name is Don as you might have guessed. When the dealer starts changing parts at your expense you can bet that they haven't got the slightest clue what is wrong! My jeep is hanging in! I'm noting the actions that you are taking and I might look and see if I have any chafing wire bundles. We just finished watching the second series of "Fringe" and I was beginning to think that only the professor could solve this bug. Cheers!

Hi there y'all.
I had the ETC flashing while driving, and the engine power to drastically reduce, not allowing more than 3000 rpm and 120 km/h of speed. I brought it to Jeep service as soon as I could and they found the faulty part. It was a sort o big tube or pipe, that had a leak of high pressure air, after the turbo. They replaced the faulty part under warranty and my 2011 70 years limited edition Patriot is working just fine. I'll drive 1000 km this week end, I'll let you know if all is well. Finger crossed

Been reading about different solutions to having the ETC light come on intermittently, along with the ESP indicator. I tried all the tricks hoping it would be a simple fix, finally broke down and brought it into the dealer to have them look at it. Technician ran diagnostics on the computer and found a fault code for the throttle body motor. Had the dealer replace the throttle bottle assembly and thankfully that was the solution. My question to the group and to Chrysler, why put in a system that relies on a inferior, under-engineered piece of crap motor to handle the throttle duties. I had the dealer keep the motor for me to look at...took it apart and was amazed at all the brittle plastic parts. I guess now we have a nearly new vehicle after all the money I will have put into it this week.

Retrain throttle body

Hey guys,

First post in here. I recently had this same issue. etc light and abs light on at same time and in "limp mode". mechanic said needs new throttle body. I'm going to replace myself this weekend. When GabrielC said he had to "retrain" the etc after installing the new throttle body, is this just the same as getting the computer flashed. Or is it a different procedure? will it accomplish the same thing? any help would be great. i'm not sure if my regular mechanic can perform this task.

Thanks!

Good timing to resurrect this thread after a few months of inactivity. I am also a first time poster. Go easy on me. :notworthy:

This happened to my wife and I about halfway through a 3 hour trip home this past weekend. It took a few tries turning the car off and on, but the ETC and TC lights finally went off. The ETC light flashed a few more times during the rest of the trip, but we made it home.

Bought the car February 2013 and my wife is taking it back to the dealer (bought extended warranty) tomorrow. This sounds like it's the problem, and if it isn't covered by the warranty, I will most likely have a few questions on how I may be able to do this myself.

Hi everyone, new to the board, just purchased a used Jeep Patriot Sport 2008 a few weeks ago. Yesterday when driving home, a block away from my house, the light came on, and I lost power. Thankfully I was able to coast the rest of the way home right into my driveway. I turned it off, and restarted it went away. I plan to take it to a mechanic to have it looked at, but wanted to say I found a lot of the suggestions helpful. It will be nice to go in armed with information. This is my first car, and I just want to make sure I'm giving it the best care possible. I plan to be riding in this Jeep a very long time!
