My patriot started making a noise yesterday when idling. I noticed that if I pushed the clutch in it sounded fine but when I released it (neutral) it sounded like a rattle or a metal on metal grinding. When driving in gear if I am coasting there is no noise but when giving it gas I hear that same grinding or whining like something is not lubricated or there is a bad bearing. I have done a lot to this vehicle myself but I am not experienced with clutch/transmission issues. That is where I am thinking the issue is though because it sounds fine at idle with the clutch depressed. People have suggested pressure plate issues or cylinder seals to me. I don't trust my local Jeep dealer as they want $110 to replace the plugs that I could do in 5 minutes so any help or direction is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like a clutch problem to me, but it definitely needs attention ASAP. I had mine replaced not long ago, at about 80k miles. It cost me about $1200 (and a little less than a week in a rental car) to get it done, since the tranny needs to be pulled from the car. I brought it to a small shop (i know the guy who owns it), and he had no intentions to gouge me, so i feel the price and time frame are accurate.

That said, unless you simply have no other option, I'd avoid the dealerships. Take it to a reputable small shop.

For the record, wherever you have your work done, make sure they replace the clutch AND the slave cylinder at the same time. I had both go out within a year of each other, and it cost me $1200 each time, due mainly to labor costs. If you can knock out both at once, it'll save you quite a bit.

This should be covered by power train warranty. If its slipping then no, because abusing the clutch causes that. If no slip and just the noise I say get dealer to cover. Ask yourself why are clutch parts not covered? Because of abuse of the driver. How can a driver abuse a release bearing or other bearing? Perhaps keeping clutch pressed in while stopped all the time? Besides that it seems to be just bad parts. And if u r under 100k miles should be covered. What's your mileage?

Sounds like the clutch throw out bearing (release bearing) is going. As far as warranty goes, clutch assembly components are generally not covered under warranty as most warranty companies consider them to be wear and tear items. If they are covered than it is like JeepCares stated or even less. Need to look in your warranty manual to find out for sure.

I just read your post and my 2013 Pat is doing the same exact thing. It makes a rattle at idle then goes away when you press in the clutch. And it whines through the gears (ESP 1-3 gear ) I was going to ask the dealer when I took it in for oil change why this is like that with only 17,000 miles on it.

Just a litte more info to add to the thread but you guys are not the only ones with this issue. This happened to my 2012 Jeep Patriot at 14000 miles. At that point some bearings in the transmision were changed under waranty and I was good to go. Now I am now at just over 44000 miles and guess what? -Its happening again. I have another apointment scheduled but this is not giving me much faith as I really like my Patriot and was hoping to run it well over the 100k mark.

I will post the info about what was fixed the first time in the next couple days.

Maybe it can be converted to CVT? Mine hasn't failed me yet. Otherwise, maybe check the muffler bearings or something ;)

My Wrangler manual trans has been making noise for over a year now. Still works without problems, just makes noises. A lot of people have the same issue. Some had it fixed and it came back and some it didn't come back. Others are still driving with it like I am.

I have a 2013 fd1 5spd. Dies same whine as you since about new. No rattle though regarding clutch. These transmissions are just clunky and noisy I think. My sons 1993 mustang 2.3 5spd shifts and sounds better!! What's that about????

I think jeep has serious quality issues with the 5spds. Mine also whines at 65-74 and not even radio drowns it out. I have to roll down the window but that's not an option if raining or super cold. I am hoping mine blows up soon so I can tell jeep I told you so. And I baby my cars.

My 2009 Jeep Patriot is doing the exact same thing, I got a new clutch kit and T/O less than 12,000 miles ago, so that shouldn't be the problem. It is currently at the dealership getting looked at, they believe it is a transmission problem and should be covered by the power train warranty (fingers crossed)

Just to update they rebuilt it a few times total, then replaced the whole thing under warranty. Shortly after having a new 5 speed installed it started leaking fluid at which time I had an axle seal replaced. Now over a year later and 65k miles on my patriot total its leaking fluid again.

I think I am going to trade for a 6 speed auto at this point.
