I doubt that very many people are going to have a "clunker" that qualifies.

Basic requirements:

Is in drivable condition

Has been both continuously insured, consistent with the laws of your State, and continuously registered to the same owner for at least one year immediately prior to the trading-in of your vehicle under the CARS program

Manufactured less than 25 years before the date of trade in (i.e., before mid- to late-1984) and, in the case of category 3 trucks, not later than model year 2001

Has a combined MPG of 18 or less (this does not apply to category 3 trucks, i.e., very large pickup trucks and cargo vans)
How many people out there are driving something newer than '84, gets less than 18 MPG combined, that is not worth at most $4500?

We compiled this list by searching the Edmunds.com vehicle database for models that have an average fuel economy of 18 mpg or less and for which at least one of the styles of that vehicle has a current average national trade-in True Market Value® price (unadjusted for options or color and assuming "clean" vehicle condition and average mileage of 12,000 per year) of $4,500 or less.
Here are vehicles that Edmunds thinks would be worth less than $4500 which makes them worthwhile to participate in the program.

Notice that there are not a lot of "newer" vehicles... mostly from mid '90s.

If your "clunker" is worth more than $4500 then obviously you're not going to participate in this program.... unless

Chrysler would be offering $7000 or $9000...

great deal for Chrysler because they would only be giving you $3500 or $4500 on your trade from their pocket since the rest is made up by the government....

Too bad our 2000 300M doesn't qualify (too high combined MPG - but just barely: 16 mpg / 24 mpg / 19 mpg ) because if I could get $9000 for it we would be trading it in on a new vehicle.

Yes.... great deal. The Fed is going to dictate what kind of car you drive by giving you money that they stole from you and sending you to a company they control with money they stole from you and get you to buy the cars you didn't want to buy in the first place.

How does Ford compete? They don't get the extra $4500 from the taxpayer that Chrysler does. This is why the framers didn't want the Fed involved in business, it will use it's power to destroy competition.

You all should be outraged.

Well said. I've said before that Ford will be the big loser before all is said and done.

We all should be outraged, but there will those among us, not necessarily on this forum, that will think we're getting a great bargin. The truth be told, we are these idiots bosses, who are running the dealerships. We should be telling them what a car's value is to us.

Is there anything in this bill that prevents these dealerships from jacking up their prices?

#8 ·
Yea, driving an 84 or new vehicle, gets less than 18mpgs and you must have owned it for at least a year.

I'm sure there are some that may qualify on the above criteria, but they'll still have to qualify for a LOAN! That may be the killer.......

The 87 C10 Truck I just purchased almost qualifies .. must be doing 6 mpg actual. Could not make it accross town and back with a quarter tank. Appreciating and recognizing the mighty 4 cylinder engine.

#9 · (Edited)
Ok... the '00 Taurus I traded in wouldn't qualify. I did good in trading in when I did.

the '99 Explorer we have... qualifies. Not in our name though. Oh well.

The '92 Isuzu Rodeo... qualifies. This dang thing gives me no trouble at all and it's the daughters. She is lucky to drive it 80 miles a week if that! it is a gas guzzler though. No payments at all.

The '05 Rav4... NONE qualify! Must be because of the MPG's. This is leased so no can do.

yeah i got an email from my dealer saying that they would double the amount you get from the gov't for your "clunker"...but they also listed the following incentives going on now with the Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep fleet...$3,500 factory incentive for the Patriot is pretty solid...throw on top of that negotiations with the dealer and you may be able to get a fully loaded Patriot for a measily $20K :smiley_thumbs_up:

"Jeff D'Ambrosio is pleased to announce an all-new incentive program designed to leverage the government CARS (Car Allowance Rebate System - Cash For Clunkers) program and provide you with a straightforward, aggressive incentive message.

Our new program guarantees that you will receive the same cash benefit levels of the government CARS program. If you qualify for the CARS program, you may qualify for up to $9,000 in cash support. We have new vehicles, with a Lifetime Powertrain Warranty, that will sell for under $10,000 if qualified.

The new program will launch on Thursday, July 23 and run through August 31, 2009.

Check out our inventory at www.jeffsdodge.com . If you do not see the model, color or options you desire we can get it for you within 48 hours.

I agree with Joe Becker in the, "good luck," category. It is pretty limited as to who qualifies for this clunker .

However, I did hear that Chrysler will give you their match portion even if the car doesn't qualify for the clunker deal from the government.

Can anyone confirm the latter portion of this post.

#17 ·
yes, i can confirm it. see my above post. my local jeep dealer has already been bombarding me with multiple emails about these new incentives. the Jeep Patriot is not qualified for any financing deals, but it does qualify for a $3,500 incentive. they must be really desperate to move some product...since they rarely offer incentives on the Patriot/Compass/Caliber...

#13 ·
The Fed has no money, it's your money. If you don't qualify, it's your money going to someone else to buy a car you paid for and is sitting on the lot of the dealer who is now suing the company you bailed out to keep their franchise rights.

I have a '96 Grand Cherokee V8 that I am planning to trade in via the CARS program to get a '09 Patriot. This will work well for me!

I should add that my GC has a EPA combined rating of 14 mpg. It lived in MN for 10 years and is full of rust, and when the weather is cold the transmission doesn't work well. My guess is that I would get less than $1k in trade for it. The Patriot will qualify me for the full $4500 CARS credit.

#19 ·
CONGRATS TO YOU!!! I'm glad to hear of someone that can take advantage of this deal.

I think you'll love your new Patriot, especially the MPG part! If you got a $22K Pat and $9k in incentives, you'll drive out a BRAND NEW Jeep with a LIFETIME POWERTRAIN WARRANTY for about $13K! Great Deal!! :smiley_thumbs_up:

ENJOY!!! :D

For those that never read the constitution we are NOT a democracy

Unfortunately capital hill is inhabited by lunatics pushing to bring everyones standard of living down to 3rd world levels. Cash for clunkers great program, except for the fact that the government has to take that cash from another tax payer to provide it to the clunker owner. Welcome to the redistribution of wealth. It has never worked when tried before so what makes you think it will work now?

As for taking the cash certainly do it. Just remember when you do it had to be forcefully taken from some one else.

Actually No...After paying taxes all of my adult life I am finally getting something back for it. This money was forcefully taken from Me and I am getting a very small portion of it back.

That would make them GREAT CANDIDATES for this program. Keep a Jeep in the family and go get a Patriot! :smiley_thumbs_up:

Hey everyone, as you can see I'm new here. I've always liked the Patriot since it came out in 2007 but figured I would go with an economical hatchback over a Patriot because of gas mileage. However, I didn't realize the Patriot got even better gas mileage than I thought!!!

Now I was looking to participate in the Cash for Clunkers and was heavily leaning towards the Honda Fit until I found out Jeep was offering double your clunker. Now I'm VERY interested in the Patriot. I just cant figure out what my old clunker will net me. I have a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT 4X4 Automatic that gets combined 17 mpg under the official fuel economy site. However, since it's a 4X4 and I'm not technically trading it in for another SUV is there any way that I can still get the full ($4500 x 2) rebate or just ($3500 x 2) rebate? I'm interested in the Jeep Patriot with automatic transmission because of long commutes. I'm trying to figure out what category vehicle my old Explorer is but it seems it fits under two categories which would get me different amounts. If anyone could clarify that would be great, thanks!!!

p.s. Any recommendations on the most fuel efficent automatic version of the Patriot? I'm guess it would be the Patriot 4x2 2.0 CVT which I believe gets an official 25 mpg.

Sorry for the rant!

#31 ·
Can't answer most of your questions, but I think the 4x2 Pat and the FDI 4x4 get very similar gas mileage, so if you need 4x4, I think that is still in play. The FDII 4x4 would not be the good choice.

From what I have read I don't think there is much if any improvement in fuel efficiency from the 2.4 to the 2.0.

Take a look through some of the fuel economy threads, and I am sure some of the other helpful folks on this site can give you better insight.

Incentive or not... I love my Jeep and would buy it again in a heartbeat. I wouldn't think twice about buying another one for the wife if my finances would permit it.

Thanks for the reply. When I went on the official Jeep site and filled out the do you qualify option, this is what I got back:

Available Credit $4,500
Vehicle
MPG
MSRP
Patriot Limited 4x4
4 Cylinder, 2.4 Liter
21
$23,980
Patriot Sport 4x4
4 Cylinder, 2.4 Liter

$19,290
Patriot Limited FWD
4 Cylinder, 2.4 Liter

Available Credit $3,500

According to this, I'd be able to get the full $4500 which means I could double it to $9,000! At least I hope so and I'm not getting my hopes up for nothing haha.

I don't think so, sounds like you have a shot at the double deal, as long as you can find a vehicle to purchase.

Hope it works out.

I'm going to a Jeep dealer to test drive today so I'll sit down with them and see what they have to tell me. I'm just going to tell them to give me the best deal that I can get so I can decide between the Patriot and the Honda Fit. Right now, with my clunker, I'll be able to get a Fit Sport for $13,500 out the door. If I can somehow get a nice Patriot for less I'll go with Jeep. We'll see...

#36 ·
For what it is worth if you go to the patriot page on the Jeep webiste right now, it says you can get the $4500 from the government vouhcer (if you qualify) plus $3500 in customer cash. I don't for sure if that means you can't get a 100% match, but even $8000 off is nothing to sneeze at.

Good luck no matter which way you go.

#37 ·
Thanks for the replies. I'm off to my local Jeep dealer first for a test drive and a sit down to go over prices, incentives, options, etc. My hope is they dont want me to leave when I tell them of my interest with Honda and blow me away with an offer. I'll update how it goes, thanks again!

#38 ·
Hey everyone- newbie here. I have a 1996 Ford Explorer that gets 15-16 MPG on average, will be using that for the Cash for Clunkers program in exchange for a new 2009 4x4 Patriot. Looks like $4500 courtesy of the government, plus $3500 from the Chrysler incentive. I'm picking it up on Tuesday... can't wait!!!!

#39 · (Edited)
Fantastic!! I am happy for you, you are really getting a good deal. It is nice to see somebody really benefit from something. Even though we all don't benefit from what our government does sometimes, it is nice to see somebody really benefit and get a break once in a while. If you are like many of us, you will really enjoy your patriot. There is a ton of good info on this site, and many friendly folks.

#40 ·
Although the "double your..." cash for the Patriot is only $3500, you may still be able to get another $1k if you are currently driving another Chrysler product like I am. Going tomorrow afternoon to try and strike a deal. :)

#41 ·
Noob here as well...anyhoo, wife went to deal on a Pat today...came home empty handed though as they wouldn't budge from the c4c + match.

Oh well..there are other dealerships..

But we did get to test drive. We liked :)

#48 ·
They wouldn't give you the $4500 and the $3500? I thought they had to if they are a Chrysler dealership considering Chrysler is the one offering this.

I would like to know if anyone can get the loyalty discount. I want to try and get that!

What is the model of the Patriot that comes with the power everything too? I want to get the 4x2 w/the power options. I don't need any of the extras like a 30gb music drive.

#44 ·
I usually just walk in with a printout showing their invoice price, then I give them a fair few hundred $$ over that, minus all the incentives. Every time I've done that in the past they just surrender and sign. We'll see if it works on the Patriot soon...

#45 ·
Since Chrysler announced this, I may just have to buy a Patriot.

I have a '97 ZJ and I've been wanting to buy a new car (and I wasn't going to buy brand new) but with this program I may just have to.

Looking forward to see what kind of deals members may be able to haggle (such as the Jeep Loyalty rebate).
