I have the 16 inch steelies with the original tires on them.

I have 4 brand new 17inch Alloy Jeep rims (the upgraded stock). I will be bringing the bare RIMs in tommorow to purchase 4 Brand New Tires (GoodYear Wrangler P215/65r17).

The Shop told me I have to pay some Tire Fee which is 8% on top of the HST for disposal. I advised that I am buying a new set and not giving them my old steelies or tires so why would i get charged?

They said its a must regardless if I turn in my old tires or not as they get charged..
Is this a scam or what? I am in Ontario, Canada, someone tell me the Law.. i tried looking this up online.

That doesn't make sense. Did you get charged a tire disposal fee when you bought the Jeep? I mean it had 4 new tires on it too. If you gotta pay, I'd ask around (friends, family, co-workers) if anyone has some old tires they need thrown out, or pick up any you see on the side of the road and at least make them have to actually dispose of tires.

The recycling fee is charged when you buy the new tires, not when you dispose of them (I'm in Quebec).
Thats how they make sure it gets paid (and old tires aren't dropped off on the side of the road somewhere).
It may well be in the price of a new car too (like the air conditioner tax), but I'm not sure about that.

its a scam... just like the passenger tax when you renew your vehicle license in Toronto... but there is a workaround the passenger tax. :)

I was at CT this week to get a quote on Altimax 215/60R17 with black steelies. I got a raincheck as they only had 2 in stock so this will hold the sale price for another month and give me time to shop around. Here is the breakdown:

215/60R17 General Altimax Arctic - $146.24 ea - reg $ 194.99
Install & Balance - $18.00/tire
extra warranty (optional) - $6.99/tire
17" multi-fit black steel rim - $64.99 ea
nitrogen fill(optional) - $19.99/set of 4
TSF( tire stewardship fee) - $5.84/tire
Tire disposal - $4.00/tire

I think I'll waive the 2 options which will then bring my total to $1080.60 OTR.

What do our Canadian members think of this price-sound reasonable??

Yea, I'd pass on the nitrogen fill. It's just not that critical and when you're low, you'll need to find someplace to top them off with more nitrogen.

TSF (tire stewardship fee) - Seriously WTF?

Definition of STEWARDSHIP

1: the office, duties, and obligations of a steward
2: the conducting, supervising, or managing of something; especially : the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care <stewardship of our natural resources>

And a disposal fee? Hold on, are they managing the welfare of the old tires or are they disposing of them? Seems like a double dip to me.

TSF is an Ontario provincial tax grab thats for sure. I paid it ($5.84 x 5) when I purchased my Patriot back in April. As for the disposal fee I believe nextreme has it right that they charge it when purchasing tires as they assume when purchasing you have old ones to throw out. I'm gonna have to talk to CT about that one as I'm not disposing anything.

TSF just seems odd. You're pre-paying on the new tires, so I would assume when it's time to replace the tires again, there should not be a disposal fee on the TSF paid ones, though I would assume you'd pay another TSF on the next set of new tires. I can maybe see a disposal fee if those tires being disposed never collected a TSF charge, but if you paid TSF on the tires of a new vehicle and are now replacing those tires, a disposal fee is a clear double-dip.

Well I just purchased the Arctic Altimax snows on 17" steel rims for just over $1000 all in with no TPMS. My question is what style and/or size lug nut do we have on our Pats. I don't want to use the chrome closed end w/ lock nut lugs that came with the Pat for winter. I want to purchase just plain black lug nuts and Ebay shows a variety of sizes with either open or closed ends.

Any suggestions??
