Bad PTU at 12K miles

Hello everyone,
been a lurker here for quite a while, unfortunately not the first post i've envisioned making. Bought my 2011 patriot 4x4 sport with manual tranny used with 500 miles. Original owner bought it then decided he wanted an automatic instead so he swapped it. Oil Can Henry's found a leak in the tranny a few days ago. I drove it to the dealer and they determined it needs a new Power Takeoff Unit. There giving me the run around that they wont do anything till they talk to Chyrsler and had me drive it the hour back home with no option for giving me a loaner vehicle. Pretty worried that this happened with only 12K miles and regular maintenance. Anyone heard of them going out this quickly?

Even used it should still have the balance of the 3/36 warranty. Is it making noise or just leaking? I would at least top it back off with gear lube (ptu) or ATF+4 (manual tranny) depending on what is leaking.

100% correct. It does not matter that you bought the car used. The 3yr/36K follows the vehicle not the owner. Not only that but a 2011 has a 5yr/100K powertrain warranty that also follows the vehicle. If this dealer tells you it is not covered they are LIEING TO YOU!

As long as the failure is not due to some type of modification, and the PTU just failed/started leaking, warranty covers it 100%. Rental/loaner vehicles however are not included with the factory warranty so don't expect that. Dealer might do it in good faith or soemthing but it is not part of your warranty coverage( extended warranty's can have that included ).

thanks for the replies, sorry your correct about it being a power transfer unit, force of habit dealing with ptu's on commercial vehicles. My jeep is completely stock, so i'm not worried about the warranty coverage. Just frustrating that it would go out this quickly and that the dealer would give the vehicle back to me un-fixed, waiting to talk to Chrysler. Going on five days, I'll let ya'll know what happens with the replacement.

It is not uncommon at all for car mfg's these days to require dealerships call in to get big ticket warranty repairs authorized. Back when I worked at the dealerships and in the auto world in general the dealer could pretty much just do it and then send the paperwork in. Not anymore.

Too many abuses and bogus repairs done. These days on big stuff like engines, tranny's, diff's, your PTU, paint issues, etc... the dealers have to diagnose what is wrong then call the mfg to get appproval BEFORE they can do the work. For paint and body issues either an area rep will come out to inspect the issue or the dealer must actually send pictures in for them to review before any authorization is given. It delays it for the customer no doubt but it saves the car mfg a lot of money on bogus stuff.

I never would have believed the amount of fraud that went on with warranty until I worked at a dealer in Parts and Service and saw it with my own eyes :wow:. Staggering amounts of money stolen from the car mfg under the guise of warranty work. I don't think anyone at the Ford dealer I worked at( except me )paid for anything they used or had done. All burried under bogus claims. :doh:
