Argh! I managed to blow a 2.4!

2011 2.4VVT w/CVT FD1

Cruising along the freeway a couple months ago, the motor spiked to 5k RPM, and I heard a clatter as I decelerated. Pull over, feel the oil pan, it's hot AF. Fast-forward to attempting to limp the car to the nearest tow-truck, it was quite rattly. Unsure if I smoked engine or trans, I drained some of both fluids to see what I could. It was pretty obvious from the disco-party in my engine oil pan, which had the noises. Drop the oil pan to find... This.

Cargo Crunch "OOPS ALL ROD BEARINGS!"

Already sourced a local yard in Las Vegas that has a few suitable donors, so now I'm just hoping to find some suggestions on removal, especially in a "You-pull" setting. I have a water pump, new fluids, a Haynes manual, and new motor mounts already on the way to go in with the new (used) motor.

My plan is to put in a replacement used engine, and tear this one down, inspect for failure, refresh it, and shelve it until I have issue again with my replacement motor.

TLDR; Anyone have some good DIY guides to engine removal for a 2011 2.4?

Yeah some people have special skills in proving that nothing is idiot-proof. You have the pleasure of being in the presence of greatness LOL
I got the car with 110k miles on it, it's about 127k right now.

I haven't pulled the motor yet, nor do I plan to start the tear-down of my failed engine before I have my pat running again, so I can use my current engine as the template to reinstall the used engine. I suspect the failure was oil-pump related, simply because I blew the main bearings out, but I never got an oil-pressure warning. I am considering installing an aftermarket oil-pressure gauge so I can more closely monitor it. I realize 5k RPM isn't redline, but i was only pulling about 3k doing 90 coming around a semi, then all the sudden the RPM jumped and I was down on power. I come off the freeway to my **** just CLACKIN.

I had done a pan gasket back in May, here's what my bottom end looked like, then

I had been noticing a little smoke when I'd take the fill-plug off the valve cover, since I owned the car. Didn't think much of it, a little lifter tick when cold-started, they all have that noise. I guess I should have paid more attention to it.

I've been seeing some youtube videos (poorly made but they still help) where guys remove the intake, exhaust, accessories, and pull them out through the top. I'm leaning towards that plan. Looks like the OEM method is to remove the front sub-frame and drop the suspension, engine, and trans as 1 unit, but then you have to be able to lift the body high enough to slide the assembly out from under it. Without a lift, I don't think I want to bother with that route.

I don't have experience with pulling engines, but I may know where you can find help from other Patriot owners near you. There's a facebook group or three(I got off that platform more than three years ago) on which you'll find people from Vegas and NW Arizona area, at least one of which used to be pretty active on here.

Great suggestion! I Did find a vegas local group, I'll see what they have to offer.

I'm guessing there was some damage before you bought it. I hope you get it back on the road soon.
That's my thoughts as well. This happened in June, I have other wheels in the meantime, managed to save some money back to put my jeep back on the road.
