Anyone else getting only 400km per tank city driving?

Hey All,

Is anyone else getting only 400km (city) per tank of gas? I thought this Jeep was supposed to get good gas mileage? My 2000 Jetta gets well over 500 and I'm certain the jeep's sticker said it gets more miles per galon.

Usually I'll take the patriot to the gas station with the trip saying 380 and the gas light will come on very close to 400 and no I don't drive aggressive.

Am I crazy or is this normal? I tried that gas pedal trick in the winter and it seem to work at first but now I think it's worse.

Any help would be great, but at this point I want to start caring a spare gas can...

Distance-per-tank isn't a very good way to compare fuel economy. Different vehicles have different sized tanks, so one with worse fuel mileage can sometimes go further than one with better mileage. In this case, I don't know how big the Jetta's tank is, but the Patriot's in only something like 13.5 gal (~51 L). Plus, unless you're driving a manual, 4x2 Patriot, I would be a bit surprised if it got better mileage than a Jetta.

i also only get about 400 km per tank, about 120 of that is highway, 280 is city. in a 4x2 cvt

I get about the same - 380-420km/tank with an FDII. It goes down some in winter, up in the summer. On the highway if I keep her at a steady 100km/hr I can easily beat the sticker (which for FDII is 9.6l/100km). I've gotten EVIC averages as low as 8.2, so I'm pretty happy. It gets nearly the same mileage as my Zetec '01 Focus - and sometimes better, with more comfort and space. I just wish the Patriot had a bigger tank for more range!

I get around 10 liters/100kms city driving, so with a 50 litre tank it`s max 500 kms per tank. Out of town driving on country roads at 100kms/hour (65 miles ph) it comes to about 580 kms per tank. The Patriot does have a rather small fuel tank, but doesn`t bother me since I`m not driving around deserted areas and there`s a gas station at every corner. And if I decide to go for a longer trip in some remote areas, I`ve got a set of two 20 litre jerry cans ready in my garage, which will stretch my range to almost 1000 kms.

I get 400km until the light comes on. Then I drive another 65-75km until i hit the gas station. :D

Wait a minute. You're complaining because this

doesn't get as good mileage as this?

Do you really think that is a fair comparison?

I get around 10 liters/100kms city driving
That's pretty good! You sure that the actual fuel consumption is 10l/100km though, or is that just the number the EVIC shows? Because that number is an average and sometimes quite far removed from actual fuel consumption.

I tend to use about 12l/100km when driving short distances within a city (especially during the winter). Then again, road trips on smaller roads (steady speed of 80km/h or so for longer periods of time) use up much less fuel. As a result, my EVIC fuel consumption number tends to bounce between around 9l/100km and 12l/100km usually. Most of the time, that "fuel remaining" estimate is waaaay off. :) (Next trip to Lapland, we'll see if it drops closer to 8l/100km again - last summer it was 8.6l if I remember correctly. :) )

Fuel consumption-wise, the Patriot isn't really a city vehicle. It seems to much prefer small, winding country-side roads to big cities. Of course, if you ignore the fuel consumption, it is a pretty great rig for enduring the cities in - great turn radius, very comfy, good visibility in traffic... If stuck in a traffic jam, I am much more comfortable in my Jeep than I ever was in my little Ford. And if some goofball can't figure out which pedal was "go" again, well, I have no problems taking a little shortcut over the curb. :D Still, if I can choose, I'd rather be somewhere with a little less people. My old Ford was great for cruising the small winding roads in, but you know what? Luckily, so's my Jeep! :D

We have 3100km on our 08 CRD sport, we did a 250km round trip today, and the EVIC tells me that we are averaging 6.1lt/100km, it was sitting around 6.4 to 6.6lt/100km, but the nice long drive has droped it some more, but im sure it will jump up a bit again soon because normally we dont need to travel that far in one hit the little diesel is a winner!.

according to fueleconomy.gov my 2000 jetta gets 21 city and 28 hwy. The patriot gets 20 city and 22 hwy. That's a very close comparison. So in the city I can go about 550km per tank in the jetta and 400 max in the jeep. the jetta has a 55L tank and the jeep has 51L. I guess I can see the jeep getting less since it's a box and it's not manual like my jeta.

Problem solved.

City driving: I get around 10.5 L / 100 KM (22 MPG) during winter. On summer, around 9.5 L / 100 KM (25 MPG) .

Nord Edition 08, 4x4, 5 speeds.

My 3 last re-fills (city driving only):

Code:
Litres: Distance: MPG: l/100km:
------ ------- ---------- --------
44.684 433.9km 22.84 MPG 10.30
42.571 420.1km 23.21 MPG 10.13
46.801 458.1km 23.02 MPG 10.22

I usually average 250 miles (402km's) between fillups and put in about 11 gallons (41-42 liters). So I'm averaging about 22 mpg's mostly city driving. The sticker on my Jeep rated it at 21mpg city so I'm thrilled to be doing 1 mpg over what jeep said it would do.

My previous vehicle was a Dodge Dakota R/T 5.9L, it also only went about 250 miles between fillups and it had a 22 gallon tank. I usually pumped in about 20 gallons per fill-up. That was a 12.5 mpg average for the same drive.

You still have no idea what your actual fuel economy is for either vehicle. How much gasoline do you buy when filling the tank?

400km and the low fuel light comes on around 11.5 gallons, so converting to to US measures, you are getting just under 22mpg. I have no idea how much fuel you are putting in the Jetta when filling, but it has a gallon larger tank. So, let's say Jetta is 12.5 gallons and you get 500km. That's about 25mpg. Yo need to do your own math to confirm. Maybe you are putting in 50l in the Jetta for 500km.

Regardless, the Jetta should get better FE than the Patriot, but maybe not as much different as you think. 22mpg is quite normal for the CVT, quite good for the FDII if you have that.
