So I'm sucking up life in my "granny wagon" until I can comfortably scrape together enough money for a down payment on the Jeep Patriot of my dreams. I drive an "old people gold" Buick LeSabre...purchased off of my in-laws when the Hubby and I returned to the States almost two years ago. It's 14 years old, and is still a nice enough car...and I told my Hubby that I would be happy to drive it as long as he kept it running nicely and it wasn't an embarassment to be seen in. Amazingly, the miles have remained pretty low...I just crossed 100,000 miles a month or two ago.
Well, just over a year ago, it started making this weird vibration whenever we accelerate and sit at certain speeds. Here lately, it's at the 65ish range. He's done everything except clean the fuel injector and replace the fuel filter, and hasn't been able to fix it. This issue was the breaking point in my deciding on a new vehicle.
Besides that, it has the world's most sensitive horn. If my bracelet brushes against it, it goes off. And it's gotten to where you have to hit the horn again to shut it off. I seem to randomly honk for no reason at all. People must think that the lady in the granny car is a royal @$$.
So there go my two requirements. It's not running right, and it is now an embarassment.
So I've been piling money away all year...with the plan that at the end of the year I'll have a nice chunk for a down payment put away and be able to sell my car and add hopefully $1000-$1500 to the nest. I hope to order my Pat in Nov or Dec for 2008 delivery.
Life has even become more convenient...I now work within a few miles of Hubby's workplace, so I can sell my car without worrying about a delivery date on the Pat...if we go down to one car for a few weeks it's no big deal.
Plus, he's been in Iraq since late last year paying off our debts...meaning better credit and lower interest rates on loans. I've got a pre-approved offer with my credit union right now...down .75% from the pre-approved rate they were offering a couple of months ago. By the time he returns in Aug, we'll be doing even better, and I can hopefully qualify for some astronomically low APR. My goal is to keep payments below $400 a month.
But somewhere, I must have done something to set off the automotive gods. A few months ago, my steering column started smoking. With visions of my airbag deploying on me on the freeway, I took it into the dealer to find out that the turn signal switch had gone bad and needed replacing. To the tune of $400. (THIS is the thanks people get for faithfully signaling turns!)
And today, while driving home on the freeway, fresh from the carwash, a rock pops up from our of nowhere and leaves a nice little asterisk on my windshield...midway up, just to the left of my field of vision.
Just when I don't want to have to dump more money into the machine!

Just wanted to vent. I'm only a few months away from ordering the vehicle of my dreams...and hopefully just that far away from getting rid of the granny.
So...anyone else have any interesting tales that involve the mantra, "just a few more months to go...just a few more months to go..."
Is it 2008 yet?!?
