I've already done a search on these forums as well as googled. Today, the fault/ warning light came on. I have 35,200 miles on my '08 Limited 4x4.

Anyone else with this issue?
The closest dealership to us in ENC is 45 minutes away (due to all of the closures:icon_rolleyes:).

with that light on you should only have front wheel drive, i had this issue before, i had some interior work done on my jeep, long story short, they installed the interior pannel ( where you rest your left foot) and pulled a wire out of a connector. It was an easy fix, but annoying none the less, have you had any interior work done recently? i.e, body shop or even the dealership?

No, nothing. Only the usual oil changes and tire rotations since I bought it (other than body repair tot eh back and teh passenger side due to a car wash damaging it in Germany in Nov 08 and repairs were made that very week).
I guess I'm also wondering if it is safe to drive? Dumb question, I suppose. I only have less than 800 miles until my warranty expires. ughhhhhh.

Double check the 4x4 actuator lever. I had this light turn on on me before and it was my aux audio cable for my ipod. It had somehow slipped under the lever and was holding it up/on ever so slighty. Once I moved the cable out from under it, the light went out. Make sure some spare change or something isn't pushing the switch up.

todde, the 4wd light is different that the 4x4! warning/ fault light. When the "4WD!" light is on, you cannot turn 4wd on or off. It became enabled. The light appears to the right of the gas gauge and b/t the speedometer and tachometer, not the 4wd that you see above the odometer. These are two SEPARATE lights on your panel.
Thank you for your time and kindness in responding though.

This has happened to me once after I did a U-turn that required driving on a sandy-ish shoulder. After consulting the owner's manual, I learned it wasn't a big deal and the indicator light did end up turning off. Here's what page 178 of the 2009 owner's manual has to say concerning the "4WD!" indicator light:

31. 4WD! Warning Light

This light monitors the 4-Wheel Drive (4WD) system. The light will come on, for a bulb check, when the ignition key is turned to the ON position and may stay on for as long as three seconds.

When lit solid: There is an 4WD system fault. 4WD performance will be at a reduced level. Service the 4WD system soon.

When blinking:
The 4WD system is temporarily disabled due to overload condition.
So, if the light stays lit solid through several cycles of you driving the Patriot, it sounds like you should take it in.

Hi. I'm new here. My name is Matt, and I live in Quebec, Canada.

I have read this entire thread, because my 2008 Patriot's 4wd! light came on after a bearing was changed on the front passenger wheel, two weeks ago. I went to a small "no name" garage near my home, and that light came on right after. The guy had NO CLUE what was going on, and after a little while, I decided to go somewhere else, because it was leading nowhere (I know, I'll to pay for everything, but time is more an issue than money here).

So I went to a bigger place this morning. The guy told me he can read that the on-board computer "thinks" the wheel with the new bearing is going 7 mph faster than the three others, which of course makes no sense, so it automatically deactivates the all-wheel drive. He said the new bearing, and sensor (still the original) both look undamaged, so the only thing he could try was to replace the bearing. Also, he checked all 4 tires, because a faulty tire sometimes causes this alert, he told me.

After some thinking and talking, I decided to leave things as they are right now, and bring my Patriot to the dealer. I have an appointment this Friday morning.

I'll let you guys know what happens then so it might be useful to other users in the future.

Here are a couple simple fixes. 1: 4 wires [sorta Pinkish] under the ''Kick Plate Panel'' [the Hood Release runs though that panel], remove it, look for those wires which have a loop. If you see broken or corroded wires, fix them & re-connect.
2: Under the ''Fuse Block'' under the Hood next to the Battery. I have read that the Plug under that Block can become corroded, whereas you'll need to re-connect the wire where it's not corroded.
Now another thing I have read is this. The 4WD system is paired up to the Tire size your Patriot came from the Factory with. 3: The previous owner put P225/65R17's & the Jeep should have P215/60/R 17's on it. That in it's self may be the cause of that light staying on. 4: If any of the Tire Sensors are Bad, I have been told it can trip the light, leaving it on. [I have 1 Bad Sensor on my Jeep]. So as it is now, I already have 2 of the 4 I mentioned going on. Next, the rest would be with the 4WD system it's self. So there's the easy & then the more costly causes. [I hope my issue turns out to be the easy ones]........

A couple of weeks ago when I had just gotten my 2010 Patriot Sport, I tried out the 4WD system on a seasonal gravel road near my house. Things seemed normal, so when I finished the 1-mile length of it, I turned the 4WD off. Then I freaked out. The 4WD! light came on. The problem: I had put a couple of gas station discount cards in the 'pocket' under the 4WD drive T-lever, and one of them was ever so slightly raising the lever. Once I removed the cards, the 4WD! light went out. So Family Edict: Nothing gets put in the 'pocket' under the 4WD lever.
