Partial off.

Partial off allows some slip but will still engage the T/C when you start really slipping (BLD's), and hill decent control kicks in when you engage it or go in reverse.

Full off turns off all the the driver aids, including, IIRC the blds and the hill decent control.

 

On fdii when in 4-low or fdii mode esp is basically full off, the only thing that changes if you push and hold the esp button for 5 seconds is that it will disable the hill decent control.

 

Do you have any documentation about this? Are you sure it just doesn't go into partial esp off mode? I still have a feeling it does and if you turn esp full off in low mode you will get more wheel spin.

 

BLDs still work even when ESP is full off, from holding the button in, you hear a beep too.

 

I thin I'm going to try not going into Low, and turn the ESP full off, and hope to get more wheel spin.

 

I don't understand the difference between Partial Off and Full Off on a Patriot with FD1. I think Full Off disables ERM ?? Roll Mitigation ?? but I never get stuck with Partial Off and Auto Stick in 1st gear seems just great without the engine slow down you get with ESP On. Partial raises the limits allowed for wheel spin before intervening by applying the brakes and cutting the engine power. Full off does not apply the brakes (other than BLD) and doesn't cut engine power at all.

Dixiedawg I run esp full off and run in Low without 4x4 locked all the time when offroad, only engaging the FDII mode if I get stuck.

Actually, it still can and does (even in off-road mode) due to the stability sensor under the console. Had it happen trying to go fast up a steep, off camber, muddy hill with large whoopti's in it and an 8' deep washout on the low side. Soon as I hit the bumps the traction control light started flashing and it started cutting engine power, making us lose speed and start sliding down towards the edge of the washout. :wow: Thankfully, we made it through.

The only way to shut off the ESP completely is to either pull an abs fuse, or cut power to stability module itself.

 

Something interesting from the manual about performance.

NOTE: For maximum off-road performance, premium
fuel is recommended. While the vehicle will operate on
regular fuel when in L Off-Road mode, the engine has
been calibrated for maximum performance using premium
fuel.

 

Yeah, weirdly only the FD2 patriots have been given the software to advance timing and improve low speed torque:doh:.

 

Next time I am doing anything serious off road I will try the premium fuel. Hopefully that will get me up those hills

 

I usually put in 95 when I use the patriot on the beach, I find that it works better and gives me better economy as opposed to using say 91 when pushing through the soft stuff.

 

BLDs will lock you up, and stop you, if going up hill on snow and ice, even with chains, if the wheels spin, and they will, the BLDs will kick in.

In my Tracker, in 4wL, it will spin, but still go.

 

Except when all the tires get spinning at the same time, then there is little bld activation, when all the tires can spin at nearly the same speed, the BLD's don't really get in the way.

You can see/hear the BLD's kick in and bring the RPMS down until the wheels get going the same speed and then its clear sailing!

just drove in about 8 inches in snow up a steep hill. Passed a few people stuck, the jeep rocks at snow if you have decent tires.

With the gas prices being so low kinda wishing the Pat was FD2...but only kinda now that I got the ZJ.
