I have a 2014 Jeep Patriot Sport, 5 speed manual. It was having signs of issues at 65,000 when it started making a high pitched sound in the final drive. Around 100,000 miles I started noticing a rattling sound 50-60 mph, that went away when I put it in neutral. I took it to a trusted mechanic that I have always had a good relationship with, and they determined it is going to need the transmission and the clutch replaced. I don't drive aggressively, don't haul anything, and am wondering, is this common for the Patriot? This is my first Patriot and given this is the bare bones/no power options model, the repairs are going to be worth more than the car is worth and I am not going to bother fixing it. That said, I want another manual transmission (Wrangler is out of my price range) SUV and the Patriot is one of the few.

I am essentially curious as to whether or not I should consider another Patriot. I know this forum is likely full of fans given it is a Patriot forum but...is this sort of just how this model is? Or is it just this year?

You are describing almost exactly what occurred with my 13 Patriot. I did replace the clutch. Also, I was lucky to find a transmission with few miles on it from a salvage yard. All I can recommend is change your transmission fluid, something I've become very skilled at, regularly. Also never buy another Jeep Patriot.

I've had two FWD Patriots.

My 2008 had the automatic/CVT and required two transmissions (under warranty, thank God) but it went to 280,000 miles. I sold it to a friend two years ago and its still on the road.

My 2014 is like yours, 5-spd manual tranny. It's at 140,000 and so far no problems (only repair was LF wheel bearing). Tranny is fine. It's had a chatter in Reverse since new but nothing I can't live with.

My first car was a 1960 Ford Falcon with "three on the tree." Now that creature had a clutch chatter!

I’m not sure if the gearbox AND transmission for a 5spd manual 2014 Jeep Patriot front wheel drive is the same? If you hear rattling and grinding every time you release the clutch. Your gear boxing is on its way out and get looked at asap. I left mine too late and what could have been a easier fix has turned into mission impossible, trying to find another gearbox. The cars motor is fine I just can’t get it to catch onto any gears. Such a good run around car for work. I’d love to get it going again. Only this time I’ll deffs be getting any funky sounds checked out straight away haha
