Spy photos we're on allpar.com for months; i think its an improvement but still hideous, why couldn't they have just done a tradition style grille on the front. The Nitro is a great vehicle though so I'm sure the liberty will be the same, not if only they would do away with Family Truckster grille ( if you've seen the original National lampoons Summer Vacation you know what I'm talking about)

What kind of gas mileage is expected from the 2008 Jeep Liberty? I like pretty much everything else I've heard about it.

For me, my quest to get a semi-capable offroad vehicle is heavily based on finding something under $25k (the lower the better!) that gets a minimum of 20MPG (hence the Patriot). I'm involved with a couple of environmental groups so to purchase anything with MPG under 20 would make me look a bit hypocritical, not to mention I wouldn't feel ok with it. There is something to be said about people who truly use a truck for recreation or hauling vs. soccer mom or rap mogul wannabe types who want the biggest beast available to either haul themselves or 2 kids to and from the nearest mall, but that's material for another post!

I would have bought an XTERRA or Jeep Liberty but the gas mileage just hasn't improved enough even with the new models. The only real drawback keeping me from pulling the trigger just yet on the Patriot is its relatively low tow rating (max. 2000lbs). But I'm leaning towards a compromise-- maybe I can just get a small boat/motor. I've never personally owned a boat (always went with my Dad as a kid) so the whole towing thing, type of boat/motor etc. is all new to me....

You can probably expect low 20's (ie 21 or 22mpg) for fuel economy on the highway from the new Liberty, from what I've read. Maybe that will keep your eco-buddies pacified. The Patriot will certainly do better, but you give up the towing capacity for improved mpgs. It shouldn't be too hard to find a nice boat that is under 2000 lb, but we are not talking a cabin cruiser here. I tow a double jet ski trailer with about 1400 lb of jet skis, plus about 250 for the trailer, and I'm still a bit leery about pulling it with a Patriot.

uhoh...that looks reaaaaallly nice. Hmmm...Any clue what a loaded Limited would go for - ballpark? (manual tranny) Do you think they'll have improved the MPG, or introduce the beloved Diesel?? And I saw buttons for UConnect...think it'll have heated seats? "Buttwarmers" have become very important to me...

OK...now I see that you can go on jeep.com and build yourself an 08 Libby. Built mine for $29.5K. It's pretty sweet, but MPG doesn't stack up:
- The 3.7-liter SOHC V-6 engine provides the 2008 Jeep Liberty with
competitive peak power and torque while providing smooth, quiet
operation and proven durability. It produces 210 hp (157 kW) @ 5,200 rpm
and 235 lb.-ft. (319 N*m) of torque @ 4,000 rpm. Fuel economy has been
improved and now achieves an estimated *16 city (18 mpg using 2007 EPA
standards), and *22 mpg on the highway (23 mpg based on 2007 EPA
standards).

That's just not enough MPG for me. Looks like I'm sticking by the Pat. Maybe in a few years, Jeep will improve the MPGs on the other vehicles.

Nothing new there Dave - all the car companies have been doing that for years. Look back at the Dodge Challenger/Plymouth Barracuda in the late 60's and early 70's, or the Camaro/Firebird twins..... "re-badging" is pretty common today - witness the Pontian Vibe/Toyota Matrix (they are actually both Toyotas)
