Last night, the wife and I met up with some friends to catch a movie (Wanted - good flick) and afterwards we all grabbed a beer at a local watering hole. As we were sitting there chatting two commercials came on the TV that made me laugh out loud. The first one was for the "New" Infiniti cross-over and they literally said New Fuel Efficient Infiniti FX35. In small fine print at the bottom of the screen it said 14 city / 20 highway. The next up was the ad for the Kia Sportage V6, also touted as fuel efficient and they did something sneaky...in the quick flash of the fine print for the mileage figures, they reversed the ratings. I read 23 mpg and then it went away. I just checked their website to find out that 23 is the highway figure, 17 city. I traded in my 02 Dakota because it got 13 city and 17 highway, it was the R/T model with the 250hp 5.9L V8 and that brand new infiniti only gets one or two more mpg's? What kills me is I had old carbureted VW's for many years, with over 100k miles on them all, and they all got 25+ city and 30+ highway. My cousin's 1971 Karmann Ghia got 41 mpg highway. I'm talking air cooled, single carb with points type ignition. Nothing electronic. What's wrong with these manufacturers? Why do they think we'll accept something that get's below 20mpg being advertised as fuel efficient?

Better yet is the Cadillac Escalade commerical...

Unsurpassed Fuel Efficiency

That is like saying "We are the best of the worst".
Is the most fuel efficient of all gas guzzling beasts really "fuel efficient"?

for ads for the ford escape hybrid,
this was about 5-7 yrs ago,
ad people would push their ads focusing on MPG to see which was best,
after 4 hrs of ads, no one in the group liked the ads.
groups comments were basically, you are stressing 27 mpg like its something special ,
just about everyone in the group had at sometime owned an SUV that got close to it, and liked the idea of SUV hybrid but were dissappointed when they mentioned the MPG,
another point that was brought up was 4x4, AWD, 4x2,
they basically said well this is for 4x2, dont have #'s or details for 4x4,
and most likely at the time they anticipated AWD no true 4x4's expected in hybrid version.

These days unless I see 30+ I'm not impressed. That is for a vehicle I'm considering for transportation of my self and other people. Not for moving a camper or a pile of lumber, just people. I can fit lots of stuff in the patriot if I don't have other people to ride with me.

I noticed GM pulled all their ads with the corn and the flex fuel "go yellow" campaign since people are starting to wise up about how stupid corn based ethanol production is.

until i realized there is no alternatives around here,
Dont know about the rest of the country,
but here in NY, even if i had a flex fueled GM car, would have no options over than standard gas, so there is no point.

This is a great thread, and I absolutely agree with what is being discussed. I too look for the 30mpg mark....and yet, they are advertising vehicles as being efficient at below 20.

It really frosts my ass! Instead of making a huge or cooperative push to come up with engine options that would give us better mileage and performance (which they should have done years ago before the gas prices soared), it seems the industry is dropping trucks and real SUV's altogether. Great...but what about those of us who don't want a freakin' car or scooter? Their answer is to tell us that in this case, 20 mpg is a good deal.

Hybrid-diesel, please. Within the next 2 years, before we are all broke, would be great.

I love how they all stress the highway miles. Most vehicles can get decent mileage on the highway. I only care about the city mileage. "The silverado gets the best mileage 20mpg highway" then you look at the fine print 14 city 20 highway and mileage may vary depending on driving conditions.
The sad part about that is I had a 1981 Chevy C10 Custom Deluxe pickup truck that I had taken the 250ci inline 6 out, and put in an 1987 350ci with a rochester 4 barrell (I still have the whole fuel injection setup for that engine). Anyway, 3 speed automatic with lockup and the 6 cyl. rear gear ratio. That truck got about 24mpg on the highway (I know, I used to visit my girl friend every other weekend out at penn state and it was exactly 400mi round trip. The truck had a 20 gal tank and I would get back with about 1/8 tank left. It also turned high 14's, low 15's in the 1/4 mile (so it wasn't a slow truck).

Everyday, I get convinced more and more that fuel injection wastes fuel.
