This morning my wife and I set out on our adventure across this great country. We left NY at 0530 and made it to Dayton, OH at around 430pm. I'm a little disappointed in the mpgs on the trip so far. I've driven about 600 miles, filled up twice and am at 1/4 tank right now. Fuelly has me at 20.6 on the last tank. I'm sure my clamshell cargo box is decreasing it. I just didn't expect it to be so bad. : /

And I did some time lapse, but I'm having mounting issues. Hopefully this weekend I'll put together the clip.

That is interesting for the it to be that low on the hwy...I wouldnt have thought the cargo box would kill it by that much. I average 28.7 on my move from Cleveland to Seattle

I didn't think so either. I averaged 70-75. I try to keep with the flow.

I've had notoriously low mpgs since I bought it.

I tried that in the beginning, but it made no impact.

Doc, you probably went down 81 and onto 90 heading west. I never get above 20-21 mpg on that route, usually leaving thruway at Waterloo exit and then 89 back to T-burg (loaded, 3 adults and roof top carrier). Once, taking 81 all the way to Cortland and then filling up I got 29 ( me only, unloaded no carrier ). It's all those hills on 81 and then driving into the wind for awhile on 90 that kills my mileage, especially if I try using cruise. Just my thoughts, have fun. And be careful on those interstates, especially if you have to pull off to the side for any reason.

especially if you have to pull off to the side for any reason.

IIRC, your wife is prego, I hate traveling with my wife when she's preggo as she often has to puke, and having to stop on the high way to let her out is a terrifying experience sometimes...

Yeah, we took the 90 into Ohio. The hills there were pretty rough. Luckily, my wife is through the pukey stage. Now it's just pee breaks

good luck the rest of the trip! i am also surprised the disconnect trick didn't work :\ at least it should be alot flatter after you knock out Kentucky and Tennessee! that is if your going that way? enjoy buddy!! check your tire pressure.

Good luck trying to 65 MPH when the speed limit is 70.. You'll get run over!

I'd have to assume that the MPG decrease is probably due to the weight of what you are carrying and the cargo box on top.

How many miles are on the Patriot? You could always just change the plugs and see if that helps any.

your fuelly shows 20.7 over 85 fill ups
and your getting 20.6 on this trip,
with added weight/roof box seems like your not too far off your average
not a matter of what speed your averaging
but how quickly are you accelerating to get there?
keeping your rpms low?

I was wondering if my plugs were old and crusty. I've had it for over a year, with 21k as of right now. I figure if my car is a year old to me, plus how ever long it was on the lot, maybe some new plugs are in order...when I get to CA. As for accelerating, I'm a slow goer. I've never really been a hot of the line type. Plus, the riot won't really let me. I keep the rpms at 2000-2500, unless I'm passing.

Side note, I managed to pick up just under 24 coming from Ohio into Illinois.

So I made it to my destination. 3 1/2 days, 2,752 miles logged. I wish I could say the riot did well. It was worse than my old v6 explorer on the way to NY. It's gotten me thinking about trade possibilities. The dealer here has a nice looking 2009 wrangler unlimited...
