My Wagoneer got 12MPG on the highway.
Your Wagoneer got 12MPG on the highway? I had a '74 Cherokee and the old Snowball could manage about 16MPG on the highway. Had the AMC 360. Magnificent engine!

As for the question at hand, what would I upgrade to? Any Jeep that fits all of the following: slightly larger than the Patriot, delivers more power than the Patriot, and gets better fuel economy than the Patriot. Hmm, short list, huh?

As I already have a jeep--my vintage military one that I trailer to trail heads--if I needed to replace the Patriot, I'd go with a deluxe Grand Cherokee--or perhaps a GM equivilant. I can't go as many places as the real Jeeps go, but I have just as much fun!

In my opinion, the 4 door Wrangler/Rubicon/whatever... is just as long as the Patriot--so maneuverability isn't improved. However, you can take 5 folks and minimal gear into the wild, the REAL wild. And don't forget the "Sierra-Nevada*" pin-striping which looks much more acceptable on the wrangler than it does on the Patriot or GC...

Actually my 80 Wagoneer could do 16 easy.

My 82 Cherokee I just sold, was the gas hog. It was lucky to ever see 15. It was a wide track 2 door, Quadratrack, wide tire, automatic transmission, 360 with low gearing. Just go down the list and pick all the stuff that will pig more fuel and that was my Cherokee............It was a great car. One day I put it in neutral to push it out of the way in the garage. I could barely move it on a flat concrete floor. No wonder it got such crappy mileage!

Oddly, the 1960 Willys wagon gets 18 on the highway. 83 CJ8-18MPG, 67 Jeepster 19 MPG J-10 Pickup 16 MPG

x2

I'm at a loss for an upgrade myself. I considered the Liberty but as you all know, it's officially dead in 2012. Frankly, the Liberty was in bad need of updating anyway. I'd love a Wrangler but I can't justify an off-road vehicle considering all of my driving in on highways. I was considering a new Compass 5 speed but I can't get the options I want in the Sport and the Latitude isn't available in the 5 speed. It looks like I'm going to hold off a while. My Patriot has 115K on it and still holding up okay.

Good question. Id have to say the 2012 Grand Cherokee.

That said, I still haven't bought my patriot. =)

I'd have to say I'd upgrade to a rubicon or the artic edition wrangler if I had the money otherwise depending on cost of fuel and my financial situation I'd either get another pat or any model wrangler would be just fine with me. I also have an 89 Sahara that I like to play around in but mpg on that thing doesn't take me far haha. Nothing can compare to how fun wranglers are to drive even if there 23 years old.

Definately a Wrangler Unlimited.

I am not sure if I will want a newer Patriot or something else. If I were to upgrade it would probably be to a Liberty or a Wrangler X (small Wrangler).

The only thing I don't like about the X is the lack of security with the soft-top. Who wants to weigh in on these choices?

If you were to upgrade to another jeep what would it be?
While I personally would go with the hard top wrangler, as long as you don't leave stuff out in the open where people can see peering through the windows, your soft top should be fine. I had a softtop Sidekick (which I absolutely LOVED), and had no problems with theft or anything. The only problem I had with it, was I got an aftermarket softtop that was a bit easier to take on and off but it leaked a bit. But I loved my softtop. That's the one car out of all of the ones I've had that I actually miss. I would have had it longer except it didn't have air conditioning and in Florida... I didn't realize just how much I'd need it. When I got a job driving 45 mins to and from work, I couldn't take it anymore. But that's why I got a Jeep now ;) And if an when I ever have a job that I don't drive for... I will be getting a Wrangler ;)

As part of my regular buyer's remorse sessions I was looking at other new/used Jeeps and SUVs - wondering if I could have done better with my purchase. The viable cars that came up in the Jeep stable were the XJ, KJ and KK.

I haven't sat in an XJ for years, but my memory of them is being very cramped in the driver's seat [I'm 6'3" and 290lbs]. The same goes for the KJ with regard to driver space [dad has a KJ]. Both the XJ and KJ are very thirsty, and even the diesel KJ uses more fuel than my Patriot! In Australia you pay more for registering a 6cyl [even if it emits less c02...], so an LPG conversion is still costly with the higher registration costs taking years to recover the big spend. This leaves the KK, but it's still quite pricey for even a 2008 diesel model. OK, so the Patriot still wins in the Jeep stable with the current lineup. But if cost was no option, I think the KK diesel would be my pick. But I would've loved the 2.2CRD Patriot to come to Australia, that would've been perfect.

I think by the time Jeep come out with a true Patriot replacement with an efficient engine [2014?], I will be ready to make the move and have gotten the most out of my Patriot. Let's hope it still has those rugged Jeep looks and sips less 91RON fuel than I'm used to. Bring on that 9spd auto with granny gear for offroading! :D

Definately a Wrangler Unlimited.
I compromised and bought a 2012 Wrangler Sport. 6-speed and soft top. The mileage, so far (250) is better than I expected. 20 mpg combined. I expect that to go up some. I yanked the backseat out and stashed it in the garage under a tarp. I very rarely use it, my 2011 Pat NEVER had anyone back there. There is ALOT more room in the back of the Wrangler with the seat out. Not as much as the Patriot, as far as floor area, but what you have is taller and maybe a tad wider. It's still going to be tight getting all my camping gear in there.
