Consumer Reports Rates The Jeep Compass

Consumer Reports - February 2007
Auto Report: Small SUVs

After posting Consumer Reports' December 2007 review of the Jeep Patriot the other day, several forums members contacted me asking if CR magazine had also reviewed the Jeep Compass and, if so, could I please post the write up to the JP.com forums. After doing a quick review of my files to refresh my memory, I found that Consumer Reports had indeed tested the Compass along with Honda's CR-V and Element, Chevrolet's Equinox and Saturn's Vue Green Line this past February.

What follows below are graphical links to the four relevant Jeep Compass pages in CR's February 2007 review of small SUVs; and just as earlier, you need only click on each of the four thumbnail pages to download the full-sized page to your computer. Once again a word to the wise: get these pages while the getting's good .. as there's a remote chance that they could somehow disappear from the webserver without notice.

I'm not going to get into the details of Consumer Reports' evaluation of the Compass this late at night, but will leave it to you guys and gals to read the review and discuss the results here in this thread. Naturally I'll chime in on the subject when the time is right .. but for now I will say only that while the magazine's testing staff doesn't treat the Compass as harshly as they did the Patriot, it's still fair to say that they are not ardent devotees of Chrysler/Jeep/Mopar products. Perhaps this has something to due with DaimlerChrysler not having paid CR enough respect or, as some of you have reported, not having paid the necessary 'tribute'.

Enjoy the article [if that be the proper phrase in these circumstances] and post your comments: I guess we'll all be looking forward to giving back as good as we got. :p

Heck, after all this...I'm still wondering why Irish Waif thinks these posts would disappear? (Besides the small copyright infringement for posting the scans of the magazine) We don't delete reviews, good or bad.

Remember, this website has no affiliation with Chrysler, Jeep, Kraft, CitiGroup or the KGB. ;)

DMAG: How many Patriots in Westchester County? I will be in Tarrytown all this week and I will be scanning for Patriots as a comparison to the frequency of occurrence back home.

Honestly, not an amazingly high number based on my observations. It may have something to do with the higher average income in Westchester (which, somehow I did not get included in! ;)). Mostly higher end vehicles or imports.

Though, I do see some here and there. I really see no Compass's'ss'ss (what is the correct way to pluralize Compass?). Have not seen a new Libby on the road yet either. LOTS of Grand Cherokees and Commanders around here though.

Small SUVs
Four contenders in this test group can't challenge the category's top performers

Not one vehicle stands out in this month's group of four small SUVs. The offerings from Ford, Jeep, Kia, and Saturn don't come close to dethroning the best vehicles in the category: the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4.

Offerings in the small SUV segment have expanded greatly in the past several years as those vehicles have become an alternative to station wagons and family sedans. They typically come with all-wheel drive, have roomy interiors, and offer cargo versatility. Most now have standard stability control and many have three rows of seats. Small SUVs can also handle some light off-road duties and light towing, and they get significantly better fuel economy than larger SUVs.

The best two vehicles in this small SUV comparison test group, the Kia Sportage and the redesigned Saturn Vue (both available to subscribers), fall only midpack in our Ratings (available to subscribers). The Kia offers a lot for its price, and features a V6 engine at the cost of some four-cylinder models. It is well rounded, but unexciting. Redesigned for 2008, the Vue highlights General Motors' global resources: It is of Korean design, fine-tuned by GM's European Opel division, features an American powertrain, and is built in Mexico. The redesigned Vue is pleasant to drive and has standard stability control but still has several strikes against it. The Sportage and Vue got the lowest fuel economy in the group.

For this small SUV comparison, we also tested the freshened Ford Escape and the new Jeep Patriot (both available to subscribers), both of which rank at the bottom of our small SUV Ratings (available to subscribers). Big news for the Escape is the welcomed addition of standard electronic stability control on all non-hybrid models. However, the Ford demonstrated exceedingly long braking distances in our tests. The Escape's test also applies to the nearly identical Mercury Mariner and Mazda Tribute.

We were also disappointed by the Patriot, which looks like the old Jeep Cherokee but proved to be slow, noisy, and crude during our small SUV comparison . Our "Trail Rated" Patriot made it up our rock hill and through our off-road course, but not without a struggle.

Prices for the vehicles in this group range from $22,290 for the Kia Sportage to $27,970 for the Saturn Vue. Of the four vehicles, the Sportage is recommended. The Vue is too new for us to have reliability data. The Escape and Patriot scored too low in our small SUV comparison testing to be recommended.

Some new small SUVs are hitting the market and we will be testing them soon:

Jeep has introduced a redesigned Liberty for 2008. It shares a platform with the unimpressive Dodge Nitro.

The Sentra-based Rogue is Nissan's first U.S. offering in this class with a starting price of under $20,000.

VW TO OFFER SMALL TURBODIESEL-POWERED SUV IN 2008

Volkswagen is close to joining the small-SUV fray in summer 2008. The Tiguan will be based on the Golf/Rabbit platform and its engines will include a four-cylinder gasoline and a contemporary turbodiesel , which will be made available in all 50 States.
  • [OP/ED: VW's new model name 'Tiguan' is derived from the two root words, Tiger + Iguana.]

SMALL SUV ALTERNATIVES

We also tested two tall vehicles that you might want to consider as an alternative to a small SUV.

The Suzuki SX4 is a small, low-priced vehicle that offers SUV-like versatility in a compact package. All-wheel drive makes it useful in snowy climates, but it is slow and noisy. It has the best fuel economy of vehicles tested in this issue.

With the optional third row, the seven-seat Kia Rondo is a microvan like the Mazda5. It packs a lot of features and versatility into a compact package, but AWD is not available.

The Rondo LX retailed for $20,655, while our SX4 Sport cost $17,994. We lack reliability data for both vehicles, although the Kia Optima, upon which the Rondo is based, has been above average.

"The Jeep Patriot proved to be slow, noisy and crude, and it struggled on our off road course."

Yet, it went up that awful looking hill - something the driver notes the Rav4 couldn't do.

"Cramped and claustrophobic inside." Was he in the same Jeep that I have?

If CR panned it, I made the right choice then....

They are clueless. My Patriot stops firmly, handles with confidence, rides as well as any other $22K car, actually accelerates quite quickly, and is one of the quieter cars on the highway I've ever owned. Yes the engine noise is a bit much, and I agree the RPM's get out of hand a bit on acceleration. That's a tweak which I predict will be corrected soon enough.

Who is surprised that CR looks with excess favor on anything that's imported, and saves derisive and generally subjective comments for the American cars? Out of the top 10 vehicles, not one is a US make. Not one. Typical CR comment: the 'windshield is too far away...?" I guess if you like sitting under the windshield (eg Honda) then having it far away would be an issue. I don't like to press my face against the glass, but that's just me. CR seems to believe that their personal tastes are universal, which isn't so. Not by a long shot.

The complain about the patriot off road and give that a negative. They they give a higher rating to a vehicle that has zero off road capability. Least he admits that "that is more than i can say about the rav4 or crv"

I guess a KIA careening downhill into a tree is a better BUY then a crappy patriot with hill descent.

Handling does not inspire confidence. Great because i was looking for a corvette with 4WD.

Visibility issues. What!?

Engine Noise. They must have stuck the microphone inside the engine compartment because my engine is not half as loud.

CRAMPED INTERIOR! They are definately smoking crack now. I think somebody also took a screwdriver to that seat lever and loosened it up.

So to sum up their report if you are looking for a small suv there are many other better choices that cost more and do not have half the options or capability that the Jeep has.

Aparently being the only small SUV that can go up their rock wall, and safely go down the other side is not even a consideration in their ratings. Also thanks for highliting the flashlight, and crappy plastic, but not talking about the seats that are impossible to stain. Because we all know that families with kids and pets always have spotless cars and prefer stains.

Oh yeah and i just came from home depot and filled up the back with 8 foot long 2x4's and a few half sheets of plywood thanks to my fold flat front seat. But that is a negative too because consumer reports would compare it with an F-150.

Consumer Reports 'Jeep Patriot Test' Video

Consumer Reports 'Small SUVs Tested' Videos
Consumer Reports auto experts walk you through the highs and lows of their tests of the Ford Escape, Jeep Patriot, Kia Sportage, Saturn Vue, Suzuki SX4 and Kia Rondo small SUVs.

I thought that this video was actually pretty fair for the most part. They show you exactly what they mean by "Fit & Finish" problems and they ackowledge that the Patriot can make it up the Rock Wall while the RAV4 And CRV can Not. I also think that this Video Review is better than the Written magazine review that CR did.

The thing that Consumer Reports doesn't take into account is Value. The Patriot / Compass give much better "Bang for the Buck" than the RAV4, CRV...

Thanks for sharing. Don't suppose you have the Video from the February 2007 Jeep Compass test???

The shape gives it "more interior room" but later it is clausterphobic?

It has "some offroad" capabilities... where we test anything that is "advertised as offroad in some way" (meaning we won't test a RAV4 or CRV because they are not advertised as offroad)... "it was a real struggle but does make it and a RAV4 or CRV will not" and your complaint is what?

Slow off the line? It looked to go from 10 MPH up to 75-80 fairly "normally", and he must have had the pedal buried to get it to rev that high...
I don't have mine yet, but the one I test drove got me from 0-75 from the beginning of the on-ramp to the end (not a long one, just about average) and it never went over 2500 RPM (of course I did NOT have the throttle buried, nor did I need to).

You always have to be leary of people that start a sentence with praise and intend to contradict whatever they say with a big "but" at the end.

Like the part about the handling, does it not provide you with confidence because it is a Jeep instead of a CRV. Since the handling is so bad, why not attempt to flip/crash it and then you can really beat it up.

competition.

The good news is the Patriot was included in the review (along with the Ford Escape, Kia Sportage, Saturn View, Kia Rondo and Suzuki SX4); the not-so-good news is apparently the people at CR don't think much of the Patriot. Out of 17 small SUVs ranked by the magazine, our Patriot ended up in a dismal 16th place just one step ahead of the Grand Prize loser Dodge Nitro. While I hadn't expected the Patriot to place first ahead of the Honda CR-V or the Toyota RAV4, I did think that the Patriot would easily earn a Top Ten spot and perhaps even make the Top Five. Boy what do I know? Nothing I guess because the Patriot wasn't even a remote contender having scored just half the number of points as the pack-leading RAV4.

OH WOW!!! Thats a huge change from the 2007 New car edition. I actually bought my Patriot based on what CR had to say about it. They didnt have any real stats or anything like on it but they did cover the areas I was most interested in. And they compared it to the Compass and the Caliber which are the 2 cars i was looking at prior to finding the Patriot.
Eh, what do they know anyway! :D

I'm glad that these reviews don't sway the smarter buyers.

I am extremely happy with the Patriot. The ride/handling, the interior, the great body/looks, and great gas mileage. I am now getting 28 MPG (mostly highway) with my 4x4 CVT ! Not bad for a SUV

Thanks for sharing. Don't suppose you have the Video from the February 2007 Jeep Compass test???
Hello Neely,

I just knew :p you'd ask! If and when I find a similar CR Jeep Compass test video I'll be sure to post it here or in the Jeep Compass section of these forums, and I'll also PM you to advise you that it's up. To date I haven't been able to find it, so perhaps it's no longer available; however if perchance you find it first before me, send me the URL if you like and I'll get it posted on the boards.

BTW, did you see the thread I started last night titled:'Compass attracts new buyers to Jeep brand'. It references an informative article from the Rockford Register Star that among others things quotes a Chrysler spokesperson as having said that ... the Compass was never in danger of elimination. In fact it is considered successful and has met or exceeded management's expectations, with very good sales reported in Europe and its' ability to attract formerly non-Jeep buyers to the brand.

I know you'll like what you read!
