Last weekend I went offroading with another member from this forums and I can definitely tell why FD1 isn't as good as FD2. He had a 2010 FD2 and I just had my 2011 FD1.

I think the main thing that really lags in FD1 is the lack of low gearing. There was 2 obstacles where I was definitely burning my cluch trying to get over some rocks where as the FD2 just rumbled up over them. Also the lack of a lower backup gear is frustrating even in parking lots and such. It seems like twice as high as the first gear and I really never can lift my foot entirely off the cluch when backing up unless i want to go flying. Definitely not good for offroading.

Other things like tires help out a ton too. I just have the all season tires and those obviously dont perform as well as the tires that come on the FD2.

Things I was impressed with that are just ABOUT as good on the fd2 is the four wheel drive system on fd1. FD2 has those break locks which are better but I really don't believe they are better by much. They also seem to give some trouble with locking up too much. The FD1 system works great. It will have tires spinning in the air at times but still can supply enough power to the tires on the ground to get over things.

I also am impressed that the 2011 FD1 has the same ground clearance as the FD2. I bet I would have been scrapping bottom with the 2010 or earlier FD1s

Tow Hooks would definitely be nice on the FD1 and skid plates but at least I have some plastic skid plates on the FD1 that came with it.

I really haven't found the need for the FD2's extra oil cooler. My engine never heated up that much eventhough I pushed it to 5-6k rpms.

One last thing is the patriot has a pretty small wheelbase which is better for offroading than the wheelbase on the grand cherokees. I could see getting high centered easier on the basic grands.

Overall I think the FD2 is actually pretty close to the ability level of a basic 4wheel drive wrangler from what I see. I wouldn't compare the fd1 to this though. Its just a step above the crv or rav4 in ability. I would still rate it higher than the Forster though.

man I wish I had gone with you now! Did you come across any snow up there at all? The Ranger station I called up said the trail was closed just past Ute creek due to a snow drift. I had my fill of busting open trails around Kenosha Pass on Saturday I didn't want to take on anymore. That and I had beer to brew if I want it to be done in time for my next trip home.

Yeah when we got to the top of the ridge, the rest of the trail was closed due to 4ft snow. There was a guy on an atv that had to turn around because it was too deep. But the trail had little patches of snow here and there but nothing too bad. We never got over to saxon mountain because of the snow.

Pretty much took all it had, but the FDII climbed it all the way an inch at a time. 4 Lo, locked, ESP off, no wheel spin, no running start.
I don't have pics going up it, but others did see it and they might have some pics.

Doubtful... good looking trip btw... The view looks great!

Wow - Great thread, awesome pics too.
Interested to read about the BLD's as I thought this was one item from the FDII package that I would have really benefitted from on my FDI.

Nice post, good photos, great to see some other folks taking their Riots out to play.

I have the FDII and part of me thinks when I trade it for an 11 I should get the FDI for the extra mileage, but then I think of the times I have been glad to have the advantage of the FDII. Although for 11 models as you stated the clearance is the same, and I've seen Butch and Todds FDI's make my driveway in winter, although it wasn't the worst conditions that mine has made it in.

Then I see some folks with FDI's post here with mileage the same as me, or worse.

Damn these decisions!

Keep having fun, and keep posting, we like to see these posts.

Some great pictures. :)

I have a 2.4 FDI. I will be taking mine to do some light offroading hopefully by this weekend. Problem is with approach angle on mine with the Euro bumper. I am awaiting my lift springs that I will probably be getting end November - this should change things a bit. I am also running Yokohama Geolandar AT-S tyres which by all account perform pretty good offroad.

I think not the rubicon edition but just the normal 4x4 wrangler, i think the fd2 has a pretty similar ability level, the patriot still isn't quite as good on the specs with ground clearance, approach and departure angles and wheel base but those are just numbers.

Those tires will help out quite a bit. I just have those all season tires and well they just aren't quite made for offroading lol

And the difference between a Ford Fusion and Mustang GT are also "just numbers". Those numbers are huge, you're also forgetting the TQ advantage, wheelbase, wheel travel, and the durability. If you come down hard off a rock with a wrangler, you may dent the bumper... you do that in a pat, and the bumper could get ripped off. I have seen stock wranglers in positions that would be impossible for a patriot...

I'm not trying to belittle the patriot or be mean, but the comparison just isnt close. I would take a base wrangler over ANY other well configured model in the entire Jeep line up for off roading. The patriot is good at what it does, but I cant agree with your statement...

EDIT:
And an example, last year I drove through 18 inches of unplowed snow in my stock TJ with its stock spec balled tires... And it wasnt the light fluffy stuff... I cant see the patriot managing well...

TJ99er, you have to bring that to my driveway in the winter, and well see. I'm only a couple hours from Buffalo, and maybe 5 from where you are now.
lol I would love to... but by then it will be even farther from stock :D

not a chance in heck. pardon my language

I drove some rough uphill road with an old stock cherokee with bald tires. He kept it in 2WD while I had it in low gear 4x4 with good need.

Your drive way is uphill right? inch it forward, back it up, inch it forward back it up. Just pack that shiz down. You have to be pretty reckless to get stuck going up hill.
Depending on the snow, if you pack it down, it can turn to a sheet of ice and make things worse...

Depends on the other vehicle, and if it has front and rear lockers, or not.

The only times I ever got stuck in the Patriot was when I got high centered. More clearance would help.
