For years now, I've recommended Falken Wildpeak AT3/W tires to fellow Compass (and Patriot) owners. I have personally used them on my Patriot and Compass and have been more than pleased with them. I've also been using Dunlop tires on my motorcycles for years. In my personal experience, both Falken and Dunlop have been terrific tires. Of course, I'm sure that other tires are just as good, but not all. My Patriot came with Goodyear tires, and those particular ones were total crap. They barely made it to 10k miles before they were unsafe to drive on. I put Wildpeaks on it and they were good for over 65k miles and still had tread left when I traded the Patriot in for my Compass. I put Continental tires on my previous motorcycle, and they caused the bike to have a serious wobble. The shop replaced them with a new set under warranty, and they did the same thing. I put Dunlops on and the problems were gone. I tend to stick with what I know is good, so I've stuck with them. Then, my employer offered me a position in the Sumitomo Rubber plant in Tonawanda, NY. One of the plants where both Falken and Dunlop tires are made, and the only one in the USA. While working there, I got to see first hand how serious they were about making a quality product. So, I started recommending them to anybody that mentioned needing tires. I was never employed by Sumitomo, just a contractor who maintained some of their production machinery. I watched them pour millions of $$ into the plant and make many improvements over the years. Then, on Thursday, November 7th, just 3 days ago... they do this:

It caught everybody by surprise. I regularly attended meetings where future projects were being discussed & planned. There were major projects in the works for December, already planned and scheduled. Many projects that were just completed in July. And then, seemingly out of the blue, they just locked the doors. Not cool. Not cool at all.

Thankfully, I still have a job. I've already been assured of that. Just might have to drive a bit further to get there. But over 1500 people don't. Right before the holidays. What a sh!**y thing.

Well, I guess the people on this site won't be buying Dunlop or Sumitomo tires, so their business is about to decrease further.

I worked for a company that always referred to the employees as family. Reality, however, was different. I'm glad you've still got a job.

I've only driven on Dunlop tires a few times, usually someone else's car so I don't have anything good or bad to say about them. The past ten years I've used the Firstone Destination LE2 tires on the Patriot and the wife's Vue, 4 sets in total. They were excellent all weather tires. Both vehicles need new shoes now and funds are tight. The vue is getting a set of Goodyear Assurance that I scored brand new off govdeals for $250 and the jeep is getting Nexen Roadians, also a sub $400 score. I hope they'll be decent.

Yeah, definitely not cool about the closure.

I have Continentals on my Patriot and it rides like a dream.

I do have Falkens on my sporty car (which looks like they are a Sumitomo brand). I am in need of replacing them this spring and I was considering Falkens again, but those are off the table now after seeing this news.

That's a horrible situation. I lost my job just once 40 years ago due to a "reduction of workforce" and it changed my entire life (some good/some bad). We survived and prospered, but it sucks. I can empathize with these people. I will pray for better outcome moving forward.

That sucks. Glad it didn't cost you a job though.
I've been happy with Toyo Open Country on the Jeep the past few sets and I've, almost, always ran Shinko on the motorcycles. Never even have to balance those, install them at home and go ride. Even well over 100mph. Tried Michelins on the bike once and took them right back off and put Shinkos on. Could not get the Michelins to balance well enough to get to work through town at 40mph. And they cost 3 times as much as the Shinkos.

I was lucky in the casino gaming industry even during take overs, retired now. My gf of 21 yrs not so lucky, working in the bank industry ( as a teller ) is the worst, once over 6500 different bank companies at One time in the U.S. now about 2200 to 2500 remain. In about 20 yrs that number will go down more. That's Banks and Savings & Loans.... She was lucky to secure a job after all the requisitions as an auditor for a Cpl that own multi mobile home parks in North & South Jersey......Pays well too! Riicr48

Sometimes the change we should make is forced upon us. Both times that I've left a job under pressure, things quickly worked out even better. (y)
