I have a 2009 Jeep patriot sport 2.4L. I have a blue tooth scanner with JSCAN and also a cheap handheld one.

Trying to figure out if I can access that info on a 2009. i know later models you can but I cant seem to find it anywhere in my scan tools.

From the Dashboard screen, try going into the "Modules" section, then select "Transmission Control" module, then select "Live Data" section, tap the three dots button to select PID's, and type "transmission fluid temperature", and see if it gives you a temp selection.

I use a inexpensive reader and leave it plugged into the port to monitor the transmission fluid temp while I drive. I am in AZ and it has alarmed out and gone into safe mode a couple of times so this allows me to slow down before getting stuck on the side of the road.
TFT is what it shows up under my monitor menu.

It looks like i dont have exactly "trans temperature" pid as shown in your examples but i do have something that says ATF temperature with a CAN transmits signal below it. Would this be the same thing? also, what temp range should it be in to be normal and what temp should I look out for in the event it starts going too high during a long trip?

ATF Temperature is what you want to look at. On my 2014 FD2 Patriot, driving to work the temp would be in the 160-165 range. Longer highway drives and hills would get it up higher. I wouldn't worry about 190, but if it starts getting up around 200, that would cause me some concern.
