Hi guys,
Had new rear subframe fitted and car has developed some vibration. It can vary in intensity from mild to a rapid rumble, I raised the rear of the car to check the propshaft and the UJ are good but found I could not turn the prop by hand or by the rear wheel. Thinking it may be in AWD I started the car and operated the 4X4 lever a couple of times but to no avail.
At one point before the vibration issue I was getting the odd 'clunk' sound and could feel the car jolt slightly, the occasional 'clunk' disappeared to replaced with the vibes.
Any clues would put me out of my misery lol, thanks guys.

P.S. its a 2008 2.0lt VW diesel with 6 speed manual box.

This may sound strange, but to get the prop shaft to turn you'll probablly need to lift the front wheels off the ground. The prop shaft is connected to the transaxle through the PTU (Power Trasnfer Unit), which is always engaged, therefore the prop shaft should be turning with the front wheels.

No power is sent to the rear wheels until the ECC (Electronically Controlled Clutch, mounted to the rear diff) is activated either by the computer (for traction control) or manually by operating the lever.

Hope this makes sense....

So how are the rear wheels still being driven with the 4WD light not illuminated on the dash?
Or is part time 4WD engaged within the rear differential.
I have had the front wheels off the floor with 4WD drive deselected and the rear wheels still push the car! this suggest to me that it was stuck in 4WD unless I am missing something...

Right, today (monday :() I have been whacking seven bells out of the ECC then test drove, same. Jacked up front end and tried it in 1st and reverse and with '4WD' on and off but nothing makes any difference.
I dont have a wiring diagram so not sure which is the 4WD fuse.
The vibration is still there, usually (but not every single time) starting at 38mph up to 50mph in 4th gear. The 'clunk' sound from the rear occasionally occurs at low speed as if jumping out of a gear, it can be felt through the car slightly.

Disconnected the ECC plug on the diff end.
4WD! illuminated on dash (even though not selected). Vibration has now gone. Now in 2WD. Will reconnect the plug tomorrow to see if all returns to normal, legs crossed.
Will update afterwards.

Could the 4WD switch be broken?
