Hi! I was just wondering how much it is to get transmission fluid changed? I was thinking about getting it looked at when i go to an oil change place because i’m almost at 100,000 miles. Would it be weird to take it to an oil change just to get that looked at?

Hi christo,

The common oil changes places like Grease Monkey probably don't do CVT fluid changes; it's probably best to talk to a dealer or an independent transmission shop.

The price at a dealer is usually between $350-$450 give or take, and independent shops might charge less so it might pay off to call around a little.

Along with the fluid they'll also need to change both filters; there's one in the transmission pan (sometimes called a pan strainer or pick-up screen) and another paper filter inside the side of the transmission that's very important to change.

i know my oil change place does do transmission fluid exchange

Ok, from what I've seen most quick lube oil change places will do standard automatic's but tend to shy away from CVT's, but if they're familiar with CVT's, the special fluid they take, and how to properly drain and re-fill them then great.

One last thing, they don't need to do a flush using a machine, a simple drain and fill with filters is all that's needed.

yeah for sure, i was thinking about calling them first to ask. there is a jeep dealership surprisingly by my college so i might call them and ask how much it would be. do you think an oil change would be able to see if i need my transmission fluid changed yet?

I don't know if they can tell or not, like I said most of those places don't want to deal with CVT's; that's even been true with some dealers.

But with 100k miles it should have been done at least once already, if not then it's definitely due.

If you want you can probably get a good idea yourself by taking the engine oil dipstick out, wiping it good and clean, then taking the cap off the CVT fill tube and gently pushing the oil dipstick down it as far as it will go. Pull it back out and look at the fluid. If it's black and thick then it's due.
