Hey all,

After I turn my car off the rad fan stays on until the battery dies the next day. Pulling out the relays doesn't turn off the fan but pulling out fuse #15 does so that's my temporary fix for now. I am thinking about buying some new relays. Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Kurt

Hi Kurt,

The PCM reads the sensor, and turns the relay on as needed by grounding out one side of the relay coil. IMO, if you pulled the relays and the fan still runs, you have a short circuit across the relay contacts. Check the relay block for corroded broken pins that might have come loose, causing a short.

Heya bud,

I took a few photos and two of the relay slots have corroded pins in them. I hope you can tell from the first image and the second is to give you a perspective on the box.

The previous owner had a starting issue so he identified that the relays had corroded and replaced them. He gave me the old relays and yes, they have broken pins.

What do you recommend to remedy my issue?

If there not too far gone you can use electronic contact cleaner, available on Amazon gust give it a good spray down and if it's on the heavy side a scrub with good old pipe cleaners. The spray will also leave a protective film on the metal to help prevent further corrosion. But the proper fix is to replace the corroded contact's.

You can try cleaning it, but the corrosion may have gotten bad enough to the point the wires to the relay sockets have broken (click on vid below)

If you don't want to cut out the old box and wire in a new one, you can try to solder the wires to the relay pins directly to get by: https://www.jeeppatriot.com/threads/relay-box-corroded-wires.297993/

But depending on how many wires are bad it may make better sense to just bite the bullet and put in another box especially since the previous owner was having problems.
