Hey all,

I just finished a complete detailing of my new riot and am dealing with these water spots on the flat surfaces (hood and top). I just waxed the ride using Nu Finish, that didn't remove them. Then I went back over with Meguiars Showtime instant detailer and still can't get them off. My jeep is black and these stubborn spots are driving me mad.

Anyone know any good tips for removing and/or keeping these off? I'm sure they appeared after my wash when the water dried on those surfaces before I had time to dry it off.

Claybar it with a quick detail spray.

You waxed them in!

Clay or a mild paint polish should do it. You'll have to reapply your wax.

How to prevent them? A good wax/sealant will help the most. So will drying with a towel after a wash. Now much you can do for the morning dew if you park outside. Keep it waxed is best you can do.

Use the same water that put them there to get them off. Then dry it quickly to prevent them. I have very hard water at my house so when I wash a car, I have to do smaller sections at a time and constantly keep the whole vehicle wet. Once I'm done washing, I rinse the whole thing down again, then dry it very quickly. This has always worked for me, hopefully it will for you too. You'll probably have to remove the wax first.

So I tried the clay bar as suggested with very little results. It removed a small portion of them so maybe I'm not applying enough pressure? The directions on the bar said to use light pressure. I was wetting down the areas before applying the clay. Now, half of the wax is gone but most of the spots remain... MY apologies for lack of "clay bar" knowledge, this is the first time I've ever tried this product.

Same here but with the windows. Hard water spots all over the windows and nothing seems to remove them. I´ve tried vinegar, window cleaner, lemon/lime, even acid!! and nada, still there.

The spots on flat surfaces (hood and top) were removed when I waxed my Pat. Used Meguiars DeepCrystal System (a 3 step system). Still trying to figure it out how to remove the hard water spots from windows.

Cheers!

Here is an article on Meguiar's Online on how to deal with hard water spots. If you are having a bit of difficulty getting rid of the spots, it may be a "type II" spot. this means it may be a bit below the surface. These spots take a bit of work to get rid of. I hope this article helps you out.

Mike Phillips is very knowlegeable on car paint care. I believe he is no longer working for Meguiar's Online and has moved on to Autogeek.com which is another excellent car care site.

You need to polish them out. Pick up some Meguiars Scratch-x. It's pretty mild when applied by hand, cheap and effective. Remember to re-wax.

Here is how... Read my previous answer and you will also see this product mentioned. Have used it before and it works wonders.

Hi - I have found that using wheel cleaner, the type for cleaning really stubborn brake dust off alloys such as wonder wheels etc works well. Put some on a cloth and dampen the area for a minute or so and gently rub, followed by a good rinse down, works well on windows as well.

I have used this to good effect in the past several times to remove hard water spots, it seems to dissolve the salts/scale very effectively, especialy if water has been baked on in the sun.

Good luck

The water spots, when dry, are generally alkali in nature. Try a little cola wetted on a soft cloth. The phosphoric acid in the cola should help dissolve the salts. Or not. Then water clean and rewax if you just have to do that sort of thing.

When ever I see this topic I can't halp but think of the time a huge icicle fell off the building onto a guy's car and broke the windshield and dented the hood. We often refer to ice as "Hard water" as a joke. Minnesota humor I guess. :)

Why not save yourself the money of buying these products and just use rainwater to rinse the car after washing, I am able to store 200 litres of rain water in a water butt (UK weather ) and it works a treat, you must have noticed that after it rains and the car dries those water spots arent there? Hope this helps:)

I'll second that

I too collect and use rain water, it's naturally soft in Ph and leaves the paint feeling much slicker without those nasty 'limescale' spots.

Also use it to clean the house windows!

Cheers
