MPG beats govt rating
Today, I drove to the Airport to pick down my daughter; a 44 mi round trip (4 city + 40 hwy). My little Riot fuel economy was better than the Cdn govt rating. Toronto noon temperature was 20 C (68 F).
Cdn Govt city/hwy 8.9 L/100km, 7.1 (26 mpg US, 33)
my actual city/hwy 8.7 L/100km, 6.5 (27 mpg US, 36)
Like the US EPA testing method, the Cdn testings were done in the lab, with no aerodynamic drag or rough pavements; thus yielding some very optimistic benchmarks.
Whereas, my actual sample trip today was done in more realistic conditions: 9 stop signs; 6 red lights; creeping/coasting thru 5 lucky green lights. The hwy speed was 43 mph to 62 mph due to surprisingly heavy Saturday traffic and construction stretchs. There were no stop & go on the hwy, just slow & go.
In any case, it shows that the Patriot is able to best the ideal govt numbers

epper: with a bit of hypermiling techniques and luck.
btw, These actual numbers for my Riot are respectably close to the govt rating for the Ford Escape
Hybrid especially Hwy. Both vehicles have similar lunch-box aero drags, and both are propelled by gas engines on the hwy. In city stop & go, the hybrid wins by automatically shut off the engine at stop lights and sometimes could use only electric motor at city speed.
Cdn Govt for the Escape Hybrid city/hwy 5.7 L/100km, 6.7 (41 mpg US, 35)
Bottomline: The Patriot purchase cost only half of the Escape Hybrid. I'm very happy with my Riot.
