Still sorta here since around 2012. I had to reset my password to get back in though!

Still here, also. Don't check in as often as I used to. Just had an interesting problem. Parked the Pat to diagnose a problem on my wife's '10 Traverse. Then went on vacation for several weeks. Came back to a dead battery in the Pat. Typical, series 86 batteries don't seem to last more than 3yrs. Changed out the battery, now it turns over, but won't start. Doesn't sound right, either. Remove the starter, found the nose bushing/bearing worn out, 1/4" wobble. Put in new starter, now it turns over very slowly. Checked all the battery connections, every thing looked good. Talked to my father, he said " you sure the engines got enough oil, hasn't seized". Took off the serepentine belt, checked all the pulleys, found the alternator wouldn't move. Turns out the decoupler pulley came apart and ground into the alternator. New alternator, and away we went. Only major problem, other than the rear toe links.

Nice detective work! What year is your Patriot? How many miles?

I am still around and on my second patriot. But the days are getting long in its life at least owned by me. My wife is pushing for a minivian.
We've done the minivan thing... I don't recommend it.

How many kids do you have/do you plan to have? what are your vehicle needs?

We LOVE our ford flex for the "family car" with all 3 rows up, there is enough room in the back for a pack and play and a double stroller, as well as enough crap for a 3 day trip to visit family. The third row fits my fat butt for longer trips comfortably (which means it will last a long time for my kids as they get bigger) and it has been perfectly reliable. it fits 7 (3 adults 4 kids) far more comfortably than my FIL's Van(dodge caravan), and even my brother's van (some honda thing) The only things I would change on it, I would have gotten one with the roof rails, and I would have liked it to be awd, vs just fwd, we bought it used for a super good deal. My wife wants to get a new one before they stop making them. Which hopefully be a couple of years so we can save up.

Why don't you recommend it?
We have 1 kid right now and want another one soon.

I don't like the ford flex because it gets terrible mpg.
Terrible MPG? I just looked up honda odyssey MPG's and they are about what we get in ours, my wife rarely drives further than a mile or two at a time so 95% of her miles are done with a cold engine, and gets ~17mpg, when I was driving it commuting - Stop and go traffic I got about 22mpg, and the last long distance trip we got 27mpg, almost 28mpg, and that's me driving 85-90mph would have gotten better if I was driving closer to 75mph. I would bet the odyssey gets very similar milage.

I will admit to having experience with only 5 different modern minivans. but if you have more than 2 in booster seats, they are a pain, and don't carry as much as they seem like they should. and all the ones I've been in don't ride very well, at least not as well as I feel like my flex does.

If you only have 1, and are looking at a 2nd kid, Get an SUV/ station wagon. We had 3 in our saab 9-5 wagon, and it was perfect. If we didn't have 4, we would have kept it. WAY more room than any other kind of vehicle to haul stuff around, 34+mpg, and a heck of a lot more fun to drive. I thought you had like 3 and were looking at a 4th. absolutely no need for a van with only 2 kids. heck, we had 3 in our patriot:

Cute kids! :) The redhead will be a heart-breaker in another dozen years!
Thanks, that picture is super old now, at least 3 years. This is a more recent picture from a few weeks ago:

The redhead lost her red, but the baby in the jeep is now the more read head, and the youngest got all the curls, and my son has decided that he's never taking a nice looking picture ever again.

Those are EPA estimates, they don't necessarily reflect real-world consumption....though maybe you're looking at the mpg of an AWD Flex? AIC's is FWD. And need I mention how many Patriot owners don't get EPA estimated fuel economy?

Those are for fwd. I have gotten about the same estimate on the epa for both the stick shift patriot and cvt.

Driver input and individual vehicles have a big impact. And as much as I don't like Fords, a little extra comfort at the expense of a few MPG's doesn't sound so bad. Though I'd probably look at the Traverse, Durango, and XK Commander first, maybe even the old Grand Wagoneer, haha.

EPA rating
2017 ford flex mpg Up to 16 city / 23 highway
2017 honda odyssey 19 city / 27 highway
I have a 2011 flex, don't know if that has any bearing on anything. My wife does worst case possible driving, slightly hilly area, cold engine with no chance to warm up, short 1-3 miles MAX for most of her driving. and her average is 17.5mpg, once I take it into pretty heavy stop and go, like I said, I get 22 pretty easily. and 26-27 highway going 75-85mph.

but with just two kids, I would definitely go with a wagon of some kind. Like a volvo xc70 or a MB E350. If we could have kept our saab wagon, we would have in heart beat, we just couldn't fit 4 kids in.

On most Chrysler products I've been well able to exceed the EPA estimate. I had a number of company GM products and found the EPA estimates about right or a tad optimistic. That said, I worked those GMs pretty hard. Wifey does mostly highway driving with Her 2.0 FWD 5-spd and She is pretty much in the l0w-to-mid 30s MPG -- thats way over the EPA. I dare say She's never been under the EPA estimate.

Why didn't you like minivans?

well, of the ones we've owned/borrowed/rented. They didn't offer any more room than our flex, some of them offered less, the 3rd row in most were a pain to access, especially if you have car seats back there, they didn't get (at least the ones we drove) any better fuel economy than our flex, the ride quality was inferior. But mostly for us, it was the ease of getting kids in and out, and as an adult being able to use that 3rd row. Most make access to that 2nd row a priority and the third row can go stuff themselves. Now I will admit I haven't driven the newest of the new, so maybe things have changed, but a number of the ones I've driven range from 2005~2015.

I would recommend renting one for a week, and put your baby car seat in it and see what problems you run into.

We've owned 30+ vehicles in our marriage, and the flex stands out as one of the most complete we've owned. hence why I recommend it. but I cannot recommend any of the vans we've owned.

Yeah I have noticed getting into the 3rd row for a car seat or anything else could be a pain in some of the minivans I've seen. I hate how they are forcing you to walk through the center area between the 2 second row seats. I like it when the seat just folds forward for people to get access to the back. I could argue differently about cargo room and passenger volume room. mpg should be slightly better than the ford flex, neither of them are that good mpg in my opinion. The plan is to get a minivan or something of that size and then replace the patriot with a wrangler unlimited (if they weren't so damn expensive used). I refuse to spend more than 20k on any vehicle.
