Jeep Non Starting Noise

Hi, just wondering if anyone has come across this noise before when trying to start the engine ?


It only does this every now and again.

The majority of times it starts first time, but occasionally doesn't start and just makes this noise.

As per the video, it did the first 2 times, then starts fine.

Haven't had that problem on my Patriot but I've had a lazy bendix in other vehicles. I'm with jammey97 -- I think what you're hearing is the starter motor running and not doing anything. After a couple tries it finally engages.

Worst case scenario is missing teeth on the flywheel, but in that case you'd probably get a grinding noise, too.

PS, How many keys you got on that ring? Sounds like sleigh-bells! You must be a building superintendent!

I thick what you hear is called starter "chatter". This is due to the starter drive engaging the starter and releasing over and over. This
is usually due to a worn starter drive, but can also be caused by pitted contacts in the starter solenoid. As others have said, jump
the hot lead from the battery directly to the starter. If the chatter is still there jump the - lead to engine ground and them jump the
hot lead again to the starter several times to see if the starter chatters indicating a weak starter drive. If you can't make it fail then
the starter is good and the starter solenoid needs to be tested by jumping its cables. I once had this problem and proved a bad
cable was the problem. I cut back the vinyl insulation a inch or so on the cable and is was corroded and green inside. Probably from
driving in salt spray in the Winter. Intermittent troubles as you describe take a lot of patience to find. Better you than $100 an hour
at a dealer.

Bit of a delayed response, but thanks for the replies !

Finally turned out to be the flywheel that was somewhat worn down and needed replacing.

Not a cheap repair, but at least the main dealership didn't do it, so it could have been worse and now the car wont embarrass me every now and again !

Thanks for checking back. Tell me, how'd ya do that? Most modern cars its impossible to engage the starter when its running -- that's about the only way to chip the teeth on the flywheel. Last time I had a similar circumstance it was the teeth on my starter, not the flywheel.

I'm not really sure, other than its only ever made that noise when trying to start it so i guess over time it's trashed the flywheel.

The fly wheel was only ground down in the place photographed and looked fine every where else which is why it would start fine most times.

I sort of had/have this problem. Once last summer than a week ago .I start the Pat and grinding noise(like when you double start) happens, then sometimes only a thunking sound, went to dealer still under warranty
with 13500 on her,2015,2.4 ,6spd auto, so what causes the grinding, dealer said flywheel is OK but ordering new starter(under warranty) anyway. any thoughts.
Started OK when temps where -1 to -20 thou in RI.

As above, I'd guess its more likely the starter than the flywheel, and that is a good thing because the flywheel is major work = $$$.

I suppose the warranty is there to protect us from major problems. Little stuff happens. Kinda like health insurance. I don't need a coverage for the sniffles, but if its major surgery, I need some help. Hopefully your Jeep has a cold and doesn't require major surgery!

I do hope they can fix this problem, starter wining sound and a grinding sound, that happened tonite at 6:15 after work. So I will have them (Newport, cdjr) check the flywheel for worn and/or broken flywheel teeth when they take the starter out. Other then this problem this has been a GREAT LITTLE JEEP!

Well I went to the dealer(Newport CDJR) this am 0800 by 0930 the Jeep was done, here's what they said. Flywheel ok, starter's solenoid was sticking and it
happened when the service teck started my patriot. So new starter for the Pat. Even got a call from Jeep and now I have a case # that's a good thing . Now when I stop at a traffic light it is like sitting in a message chair (vibration) big time, So does the PCM need to relearn my driving habits?( battery disconnected for about 1 hour).
