http://www.allpar.com/news/index.php/2009/07/chrysler-adds-fuel-shutoff-to-increase-mileage/

Chrysler has introduced iDFSO, Interactive Decel Fuel Shut-Off, software that cuts fuel to the engine while decelerating, to increase gas mileage. The amount of fuel shutoff is increased with certain engine speeds. This system increases both city and highway gas mileage, and lights a Fuel Saver indicator light when active.

The system is being phased in on 2009 model year cars and will be on numerous 2010 vehicles. For 2009:

CVT and manual Caliber, Compass, and Patriot Limited
Wrangler (with manual transmission only)
Charger and 300 (5-speed automatic)
Challenger (manual and 5-speed automatic)
Nitro 4Ă—4 (4.0 / automatic)
For 2010, the system will be added to:

4.0 liter minivans
Wrangler automatic
Grand Cherokee V6
Nitro, Liberty, Dakota, and Ram 1500 with V6 and automatic
Dakota V8 automatic
Ram 1500 V8 automatic
oh20 noted: the fuel saver indicator light will be added to the minivans, LX cars, Journey, Nitro 4Ă—4, all Jeep 4Ă—4s (except Patriot/Compass), and Ram 1500, with select engines, for the 2010 model year. It will advise people when they have reached the economy target zone and fuel-saver mode target range.

I read about something like this today on a fuel saving website. This is supposed to help eliminate the "desire" to coast to a stop in neutral or something like that.

Since it is mostly software, is there going to be retrofit available?

Oh wait, that would make too much sense to make available.

That explains why I can never get my Scangauge to show fuel cut off on my 08.

...and lights a Fuel Saver indicator light when active.
That's just wrong. Can this "feature" be disabled? I cannot believe that many people really want lights on the dash to flash. The typical consumer will bring their car to the dealer because some lights keeps coming on, but not long enough to read what it is.

Mark my words, this will got the way of the shift lights on 80's manual trans vehicles.

DFSO has been around for 20 years, since electronic fuel injection. How it is calibrated can be a tricky balance for driving experience vs. FE benefits.

I think they are just emphasizing that a light will now be added to indicate fuel shut-off. All modern fuel injection already does this (and has done it for a while). Maybe it will be a little more aggressive now though.

Not in favor of the light, but I sure would like to choose for myself what level of performance vs fuel efficiency I want. Give me different program settings to choose from.

Heck, can we have a button like they do on Indy Cars? Most of the time you are in fuel saver mode but if you activate the override it switches to max power.

DFCO already in 2008 Riots

DFCO is already built into my 2008 Riot, maybe on 2007 too? Most people are not aware of its presence unless they have something like a ScanGauge measuring realtime fuel consumption (GPH, LPH show 0.00 when fuel injectors shut off).

Chrysler's unveiled just an indicator light for the new model. Ta-La!:pepper:

On the 2008 Riot, DFCO happens during in-gear coasting (ie. no accelerator pedal, no neutral gear) AND rpm > 1500.

I wish Jeep would re-program the software to enable DFCO with lower rpm, say 900. It would save even more fuel on coasting to a red light.

So maybe I was partially right?

Does your SG show 0 for fuel cutoff, Jepstr67 said his SG never did show any fuel being cut.

DFCO & Scangauge

Tyler. Fuel consumption cutout is shown by the zero value for GPH (Gallon per hour) or LPH (Liter per hour) on the SG 'gauge' mode.

On my manual tranny, DFCO occurs when coasting RPM > 1500, AND tranny in gear (not neutral). The LPH value immeditely becomes greater than 0.00 when either of the above conditions doesn't hold. i.e. the fuel injectors start pumping in gas.

I'm not sure what happens for CVT. Just watch your falling RPM while coasting.

btw, there is a 2 second delay on the SG display.

Sorry, can't do that. The government knows what you need and when you need it, how much mileage you should get and when. They will keep you safe and happy since you are not able to do so for yourself. You will be informed when you are in need of more protection and it will be provided. :notworthy:

Oh, yeah... what was I thinking.

It is the modern version of the vacuum gauge. It is a good idea for anyone who wants to save fuel.

Like the shift light, it should have and off switch.
