Bought my 2010 new, and with less than 110k on it, the tranny is trashed. I have driven nothing but manual since 1987, and I have gotten 200k up to 307k miles and never lost a tranny. And of course, it out of any type of warrantee that I ever had, so to get it fixed will be big bucks.

I am really disappointed in Jeep. Pretty sad that I had to go buy a 2003, Exploder with 130k miles on it so I could get to work and back and the 2010 Jeep, with 108k miles is sitting in the yard holding down leaves. The least amount of miles and years that I have ever gotten out of a vehicle.
this is exactly why i bought the lifetime warranty earlier this year. Otherwise I would trade it out right before the original warranty expires. And exactly why i haven't added a lift or huge tires. I figure if it blows, and she wines good and has been since almost new, they will replace and the clock starts over till that one eventually blows, then another tranny or they give me what the jeep is worth and i fix it myself if i choose.

I drive it normal, but knowing someday it may crap out and will need to call jeep to fix it on their dime less the $100 deductible.

I do love it though. Only if it had a low granny gear for crawling up steep gravel roads.....can't they add a gear at the plant?? it's a jeep after all...

I'm now on my third 5 speed manual transmission. My first one lasted 105,000 my second one lasted around 50,000. From my experience the 2.4 engine seems sound although I've gone through several throttle bodies. The 5 speed manual transmission aren't very durable and I've had no issues with the clutch. I'm thankful that I bought the lifetime added care plus warranty which has paid for both transmission replacements. I'll buy another Jeep after this but I wouldn't buy one without the warranty.

I don't remember having an option for a lifetime warrantee.

The original warranty expired about 2 years after I bought it (36k miles) and I certainly aint' trading it in while still paying for it.

3 transmissions in 160k miles? That does not give me the warm fuzzies :( . I assume they gave you new trannies since it was warranty work? My mechanic and his suppliers can't even find a reman tranny, so I was thinking of new. If new are only going at 50k, then I may have to wait the several months (literally) to find a reman.

I bought my added care plus lifetime at about 40k miles. You can buy one until you hit 4 years or 48k miles whichever comes first. I did originally buy 5/85k but realized later I could get a prorated refund and lifetime for a decent amount. As far as the trans, mine whines in all gears and dealers say normal. Even the techs at jeep said normal final drive noise. Sooo I am good with it and when she blows I get a new/another granny or ptu or whatever is whining for $100. I will say my ptu fluid was nasty even after it was changed a year ago. Blackstone labs found some stuff in it of concern but jeep didn't want to accept the findings of a 3rd party oil analysis company. I plan on sending another sample of ptu fluid to Blackstone next time I change fluid. Which I do about yearly or 18k miles. Manual trans fluid was crystal clear btw so my whine must be ptu.

Yes, the warranty paid for both transmissions so I can't complain there.
As I recall the transmission through the dealer was around 5 grand but you can look online and find one for a lot less. Here's one for $2600. I think I'd go that route and pay a local mechanic to install it rather than buy a rebuilt one.

Thanks for the lead on trannies. Need to figure out which one I need, then come up with some cash. Even my local mechanic, who is cheaper than everyone else, was saying $5k for a new tranny, so if I can find one myself for a lot less, that would be great.

Yeah driven manuals all my life & have sold multiple cars w/200,000 + with original clutch in good working order. I now have a 2012 5 spd manual compass that has been rebuilt twice and now has 47,000 on it and once again is starting to make noise. I've driven diesel trucks that shift better than this car. Love manual cars running out of options. Warranty time is going to run out before mileage. Transmission is a modified neon transmission. Compass/patriot much bigger vehicle putting heavy strain on transmission designed for smaller car. Lesson learned !

Yeah it doesn't shift the greatest. The smoothest way to shift is to either drive like grandma and wait for it to go into gear with light pressure or rev it high before shifting and shift it at least 3000 rpms which works for back country roads but not commuting. I tend to drive like grandma. Nice and easy as I commute mainly. In the mountain roads it is fun though to keep revs high around 3000-3500.

Hey silverflash I have a hard time driving like a granny. All those cars passing you on both sides is not in my DNA nor should anybody have to change their driving habits. When in the mountains I sometimes have to stay in 4 th gear to maintain speed. The same route in all my other cars 5 th gear no problem, If final gear was 4.33 instead of 4.10 I think tranny would stand a chance ! I know engine on the small side for size of car not much torque, but runs ok. The car isn't bad but that tranny. Will need new one by June for sure.

I have a 2012 with 5 speed now with 65k miles and have had nothing but problems since day one. Love the jeep, hate the 5 speed. Maybe its because I use it for light towing? on occasion I tow a small trailer with one ATV or one snowmobile on it but never anything more. Bearings went out two or three times on the original tranny. Finally got jeep to replace the whole thing under warranty with a new one. Shortly after it started leaking fluid, had the seal fixed, and now a year later and 15k miles after the new transmission its leaking fluid again. My wife has a 2015 same jeep, same 5 speed and has had zero issues so far. Maybe its luck of the draw. I have driven standards since 16 and never went through a tranny before.

Ironic I chose the 5 speed because of all the poor cvt reviews.

I think I am trading it in tomorrow for new one with 6 speed auto.

As Kenny Rogers sang, "You have to know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em." Maybe its time to fold your 5-spd. And good luck with the new one!

Mine had a whine that heard on the test drive, like a fool I bought it anyway. Last week the whine went away, replaced by a growl which on Sat became a grind then a locked up trans. 34000 miles. Not surprised to see more reported on here. At the dealer as we speak waiting to hear the result. Any input on how long it takes to get replaced/repaired?

Don't know if its the same for manual transmission, but it took a little more than a week (with a weekend in between) to replace my CVT. There was a day or so waiting for FCA to approve, paperwork on their end, etc. They replaced my CVT at 110,000 miles without any hassle.

Tranny bearings at 60,000 miles- 3 weeks to fix
Rear axle bearings 60,100 miles- 2 weeks
Tranny replacement 80,000 miles 4 weeks
Power transfer unit 80,100 miles in shop now:mad:
Are you sure you're not in Silverthorne Colorado? Sounds like what I've experienced from my dealer. I appreciate the warranty taking care of the repairs but the down time is unacceptable. Are you dealing with warranty work?
I've often wondered if warranty work gets pushed to the back of the line.

I had a 2013 Patriot and had the same issues. I let it go for a little thinking it was just a noisy throwout bearing. Then it started to pop out of 5th gear so I took it in. At approximately 16,000 miles I had the transmission replaced by the dealer under warranty. I had recently just reached approximately 25,000 miles and the noise was starting again. I didn't feel like dealing with it, so I traded it in. I bought the manual because I have had some issues with autos in the past, but this seemed odd for a manual to have so many issues. Never had any issues with manuals in the past.

The jeep patriot manual I drove did awesome. I beat up that vehicle by driving it off road, burning clutches and crashing it a few times. 50k miles when I got rid of it. The transmission nor anything else in the car failed. There was body damage from the last accident and I traded it in for another patriot. Best vehicle for the money in my opinion.

Manuals are usually quite durable. I've never had a problem with one, I've probably had significant experience with a dozen in my life.
Agree. That was the main reason I went for the 5spd over the CVT. Mine was defiantly a lemon. With so many reports of transmission bearings going, I wonder if something in their design was out of line causing inappropriate pressure on the driveline. Axle seals every 10K and tranny bearings every 20K more then once? I might have been born at night but it wasn't last night :nerd:

My current 2016 6 speed auto is treating me well so far. Just passed 10K miles on it and am very happy. A little decreased MPG but being able to go slow when on seasonal roads, or actually being able to back up my trailer under 5mph without riding the clutch is nice.

If I didn't have so many problems with my 2012 standard I would have kept it.

We haven't had any problems with my wife's 2014 (knock on wood.)
