Does anyone know if the dealer will fix paint chips? I got one on the edge of the drivers door... no idea how it got there.

the dealership might......you'd have to ask, but they are car dealers, not paint people, so the job won't necessarily be great

i got one there too a little while ago and because it was on the edge, getting a perfect finish wasn't vital

if you are quick and there's no rust, get a little touch up paint from the dealer and do it your self, follow the instructions and rub down after a couple of coats with some polish/cutting compound

mine looked great and now i have paint left over for all the other DIY paint fixes that will come along

My dealer has a body shop on site. My previous vehicle they touched up several chips in the hood and rocker panel for $100. At the time I thought I was going to keep it for a while so I wanted it fixed. They did a nice job and i could not see where the chips were. Now looking back at it, it was a waste of $100 since I traded it. I also heard that body shops are hurting right now because of the economy, so they may do it on the cheap.

years ago i did some DIY car paint chip repairs when there was rust - did everything by the book, but the rust reappeared every couple of years

there are some good products on the market, but given there is already rust (so you are through to bare metal) maybe spend a few $$ and get it done professionally (then you can always go back if it reappears)

but i would recommend getting a touch up paint from the dealer anyway, then you can get on any chips very quickly before rust sets in for future chips....

Thanks all for your replies. I've fixed paint chips in the past on previous cars but this car is literally 5 months old so I don't want problems with rust down the road. That's one of the reasons I traded in my old car.

They don't have a body shop at my dealer so they will probably refer me to getting the touch up paint myself. There is no rust yet so hopefully if I do it, it will be OK.

+1 on the touch-up paint. I have a 1-car garage, which usually houses my wife's Liberty. When I pulled my Pat into the garage for the first time, I opened the driver's door too wide and hit the cinder-block foundation. My Liberty and old Cherokee have shorter doors, and a rubber strip along the edge, so it was never a problem. Took off a good chunk from the edge of my 2-week old paint job.

The dealer was happy to sell me some touch-up paint; a couple of coats did the job. I still need to glue a bumper strip to the wall in the garage.
