I've always thought the area in the top middle of the dash (right above the middle air vents) would be a good spot for something... I'm just not sure what. Then recently someone posted an install of a new head unit/nav with pics, and in the process took off the dash over this area. It confirmed my expectation that there's nothing vital immediately under there. It just seems like it was designed for something to be there, then they just said "nah, nevermind" to it and laid more plastic over it.

So what would you put/install there?

Sorry- I've always wanted to post a dancing banana :)

Personally, I've always wanted a Romulan Cloaking Device.:D
It might take some real DYI work but it would be worth it!:smiley_thumbs_up:

It turns out that the cloaking device might not be so far fetched. Research is going on right now to investigate how super-lensing effects could be used as a cloak. I wouldn't want the power bill for that device :D

That space really does weigh on ones mind. ever since I took my dash apart and discovered that is that space about a foot square and 2 to 2-1/2" deep, I've been fixated on what to put there too. Mainly I've been trying to think of a way to hinge it and line it as a storage compartment.

Randoo-N-CJ you could be right, although the contraband Federation cloaking device allows you to past through solid matter as well. It was available on the top secret stealth Jeepster in 1969. They used them at Woodstock for crowd control.

Seems like I've seen pics posted here somewhere where someone had installed a small 40-channel CB unit...which if you're going to go off-road and there's no cell phone service, might not be a bad idea.

Oh yea, I read about that a few months ago actually (not this particular article though). The theory has already been proven that they can bend light. Don't quote me on this, but I thought I read where the basic principle was achieved use of a fiber optics kind of thing. I could be waayyy off base but I thought I saw (or read about it) at the end of last year or earlier this year.
The applications are going to be endless (and mostly sinister!).

You KNOW the military will have first dibs at this technology. ;)

In all seriousness (is that a word?), how about some kind of a HUD that could include the present day EVIC information as well as other displays that would be convenient for the driver. This kind of display could be built halfway into the dash (and the lower front part of the display would then be recessed a little) to where it would not stick up too high and interfere with the drivers forward visibility. Oh, and most of the quick controls for this could be steering-wheel mounted. :smiley_thumbs_up:

More hidden storage would have been nice there... I mean would it have really killed them in the first place to fit a removable lid on the opening in front of the passenger seat? I would have paid decent money to get a proper cover for that area so I can actually use it for storage...

A pop up LCD so you can watch movies, use it for GPS, link it to a camera in the rear bumper/fender for hen you are reverse parking or even display of what your engine is doing via the OBDC.

An old CB maybe?
(edit) I didnt see your post nosirrahg, I see you covered this. I will be home in july for 2 weeks, might go to landers and test drive a patriot again, raise some hell about replacing the dash in my ram, maybe I can play up their patriotism and get the dash replaced, they let me drive the Patriot while it is getting repaired, but sadly I dont see that happening.

The windshield is too deep so I have my GPS there...easier to reach! I just installed a Periferals CHYP for the AUX input and iPOD controls. I had to remove the radio so I had to pull the plastic cover you are talking about. I used the space below to help hide excess antenna wire for my Sirius reciever. Nice and clean now. I will take some pix this week.

yea, not everyone has access to, or can afford, the Romulan Cloaking Device, so i would go with the Mopar NAV/GPS Unit. not only does it work great, it looks way cool there too. :smiley_thumbs_up:

but oh if i had the $$ for a cloaking device.....i hear the Vulcans are working on one that's inexpensive AND can be retrofitted into an MK (or was it a Bird of Prey? can't remember). anyway, it won't be out before Christmas though.......:(

Yeah... sounds like what I was thinking. The CB or a scanner may make the most sense for me because 1) I already have a gps built in (it's not great, but it's there and functions), and 2) I put my Romulan Cloaking Device in the cabinet last week, but now I can't seem to find the cabinet...

It just needs something added/modded there. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so.
