I have a few questions to any of you that have used NightShade for tinting their lights.

First off what kind of prep work did you do? From the videos and forums I've read people have both wet sanded them prior or just cleaned them and sprayed.

Secondly how many coats did you put on and what effect did it have? I'm looking for a smoked look, I don't want it totally pitch black and I'm planning on tapping off the reverse lights.

Also when you put the NightShade on do you switch out the bulbs to red or is the red effect still just from the bulb shining through the red portion on the inside of the lens?

When I had mine done, I cleaned them really good, masked off my reverse sections and cut the tape away so it had the perfect outline. Wetsanded, cleaned with soap and water, Wetsanded any leftover spots, cleaned again, then sprayed.

Coats all depends on the user, I did EXTREMELY light coats and did 6 coats if I recall. Some people spray much heavier and take 2 or 3. It's something you'll just want to judge when the time comes. After it cured I clear coated over mine twice to get a glossy look.

The bulbs will still illuminate red since the housing is still red.

VHT Nightshades is a transparent/opaque spray paint if you will. It's available in a spray can much like plastidip or spray paint and applies the same way. But it's permanent, of course you'd be able to strip it down with chemical thinner or remover but they'll never look "stock, or normal" again.

Here's my patriot about a year ago with the VHT nightshades:

Finally got around to doing the Nightshade on my tail lights. It ended up a little darker than I wanted, I did 3 coats. I also did the front turn/marker lights with 1 coat, nice smoke tint.

Has anyone come up with an easy way to install another reverse bulb to go into the upper reverse bulb area that's empty?

I did the same but I also wet sanded it between coats and used a clear coat in the end. I also used rubbing compound and polished it all up before reinstalling.

This looks like a Sticky post to me... hahaha

Wet sanding, what grit did you guys go for? Are we starting out at 800, 1000, higher?

I tried tinting mine with the vinyl tint, but I am just no good at the tint film. I'm very interested in hearing the specifics of how everyone did theirs!

Kozy, looks like a good job to me! Well done!

1500 first, autoped then 2000 before clear coat.

Awesome, thanks 480Kreepin!

Since we live in the same state, have you had any problems with the law or DPS about your tails? I checked the regs, and it left this part grey. Technically, the tint is an obstruction, and therefore illegal, but the taillights could still be visible from the 1000', or 600', I can't remember which one. That, and the reflectors of course.

no problems at all, I have been all over the entire state! the way I see it...it still emits visible light at the proper distance and reflects light therefore, it's legal!

For the third brake light I did 2 coats, for the taillights I did 3 coats. Wet sanded with 1000 grit, then clear coated 6 coats. Wet sanded 2000 grit and polished for shiny smooth finish. In the sunlight mine are dark red, not direct sunlight and they're almost black looking.

I'll get a picture of the front turn signals up soon too.

sounds like you are happy with the results!? Glad it all worked out. Lets see them pictures now :)

So since the taillights are darker now, I wanted to do something so people behind me could see me braking better. Our taillights only have 2 bulbs in them, but spots for 4 so I ordered another reverse socket and taillight socket for each housing. Drilled holes out and notched out for the bulb socket. Then I just tapped into the stock wire harness, and here's the results. (the new lights are LED)

Love it man, good choice!!

Also a fun fact for everyone!

VHT Nightshade can be taken off the same way its put on! (if you do not clear coat it)

Just generously spray over what you have down and before it dries take a rag and wipe it away.. :pepper:
