Trailer tow wiring harness

I have a question about the trailer tow wiring harness from Mopar. I have a 2007 FDII (off-road) package without the tow package, which means I do not have the wiring harness.

I am going to be installing an aftermarket 2" hitch (hidden hitch or draw-tite) and am trying to get some installation advice on the wiring as there are some conflicting reports on the threads here.

It appears that the Mopar wiring harness is a plug and play that requires no splicing or drilling, but there are some reports that you need to drill a hole in the spare tire well. Can anyone confirm which it is?

Also, if anyone has used the wiring harness listed for the Patriot on etrailer.com, could you weigh-in and let me know if it requires any drilling?

Thanks!

I'm not sure what the score is on the wiring harnesses, but Mopar only lists the one type now that you have to run up all the way under the vehicle to the fuse box.
That is the one I had to purchase, I may install it tonight.... weather permitting. The hole is drilled through a plastic drain plug under the spare tire, not a big deal or difficult.
It actually looks like a pretty easy installation if you have some ramps.

  1. Mopar Part# 05267858AA comes with all 2007/2008 Patriots equipped with the Tow Group. It connects to the tail light assembly and no drilling is required.
  2. For vehicles that did not come from the factory with the tow group, Mopar Part# 82209280AC is offered. This harness must route directly to the fuse box.

I have the same Patriot - 2007 w/ FDII & without the tow package. I purchased the etrailer.com harness #118428 for $55. It has the plug-in connectors that attach to the tail lights and a little control module that mounts behind the driver's tail light with double-sided tape. There is a long wire that you have to run up to the battery to power the trailer lights (via the module) so the trailer doesn't pull it's power from the vehicle's bulb wires. There isn't any drilling (except to mount the ground wire connector behind the driver's tail light), and everything goes together quickly & easily: just pull the tail lights off, attach the harness plugs to the tail light plugs, mount the little black control box by sticking it to the body behind the light fixture, drill a small hole to screw in the ground connector, route the wires throught the rear bumper to the passenger side, connect there, and put the tail lights back in. You've got to run the power wire to the battery & connect the in-line fuse (provided), and you're done.

If you get the parts from www.etrailer.com, go online first and search for a "coupon code" - I got 5% off my order in addition to the free freight by using a code I found.

While you are under there, you might as well paint the muffler, too! Just do the wiring and painting BEFORE you install the hitch - it'll save you some trouble later.

The trailer tow prep package with the harness, oil cooler, and FULL SIZE spare was a good deal at $250!
