This should be in the knowledge base but I didn't see it there.

What is the difference between trail rated and not?

I think it's only a matter of which 4wd system it has.

Please correct these statement as I have not real facts to go on.

All freedom drive 1 systems are not trail rated

All freedom drive 2 systems are trail rated.

The only difference is that Freedoms drive 2 has low range and freedom drive 1 does not.

The low range is just a lower gear in the transmission and only in certain automatic cvt transmissions.

As such no patriots with a manual transmissions are trail rated and the only difference is a lower first gear in some of the automatics.

All patriots with 2.0 are fwd. All awd patriots come with 2.4 are center diff lock option and computerized braking traction control.

The FDII is the system that gives the Patriot a Trail Rated badge.

It is a combination of a handful of things, but mostly gearing, skid plates, and some additional electronic programming.

The FDII has the same EXACT transmission as the FDI. But has higher numerical differential gearing (lower gears). Programming allows it to act like an FDI, until you allow the transmission to go into lower gear ranges. The FDII is only available with the CVT transmission - no manuals. And is only available with 4x4... so no 2.0L engines. (all 4x4 have 2.4L engines - in the U.S.A. at least).

Extra programming on the traction control turns on the Brake Lock Differential which helps control side-to-side wheel spin. It is just adding a new set of parameters to the existing physical system - which is identical to the FDI system.

Both 4x4 systems (FDI and FDII) offer the locking center diff.

FDII adds skid plates and tow hooks.

A couple other things too, if I remember.. Better seals to allow for deeper water forging, beefed-up oil cooler to handle climbing, driver seat height adjustment (that's an odd one), fog lights, luggage rack, hill descent control, full sized spare tire. All in all I think there were about a dozen differences.

True, not all 2.4L motors have 4x4.
But all 4x4 have 2.4L motors. (again, in the U.S.A. at least)

And GBI, you are right on the other goodies.
I don't think anyone found out where/if the seals were indeed different.
But the other items you listed are correct. And that driver-seat height adjustment is a God-send. It works very well. :)

Our 2011 package also included Trailer Tow package (Full-size spare, Engine oil cooler, and Trailer Tow wiring harness). Trailer Tow package was removed from package for 2012. FDI's can get the Trailer package too, so it is not really FDII specific. In 2011 you could get the FDII for only $250 more than a FDI with auto and trailer package. It looks like the package differs from years, may also differ by country.
