My p215 65R 17 tires on my '07 Ltd FWD are up for replacement. I am using my winter tires and rims now, so before I put on my summer OEM rims I would like to purchase some new all seasons.
I would like to buy a bigger more aggressive looking tire.
What are this forums reccomendations?
How big can I get away with?
Using a P235 60 R17 there is a 0.4% speedo difference.
with a P235 65 R17 there is a 3.7% speedo difference.
These figures are from the tire calculator at www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

I understand your situation. I studied tirerack.com and only saw one AT tire a Yokohama Geolander A/T-S in 225/60/17 which is just a little smaller at 27.6" in diameter or a 225/65/17 just a little larger at 28.5" in diameter. The 225/60/17 does Not seem to be available in Canada I don't know why. I ended up buying Cooper CS4 "T" all season touring tires. My 2nd choice would have been General Evertrek RT from Canadian Tire also in OEM size 215/65/17. The Michelin Destiny was supposed to be a misprint in the size ?? Anyhow the Cooper tires are rated UTQG 780 A A with good treadwear but mine are still in the garden shed at least for another week. One reason I didn't get the 225/65/17 Geolander is because it would not fit in the spare tire well in the winter.

Below are the OEM sizes based on model:

  • P205/70 R16 (Sport - Standard 16" Steel Rim)
  • P215/60 R17 (Limited - Allow Rim)
  • P215/65 R17 (Trail Rated/Offroad Group)

I would not go too far outside these measurements, in fact would recommend sticking to these tire/rim sizes. There is at least one example of a warranty claim being refused based on someone having switched to a larger tire.

I upgraded my 16" rims to 17" rims, then put on some Goodyear Assurance TrippleTred tires. (P205/70 R16 and P215/60 R17 have the same radius)

They are not offroad tires, but short of going for a winter tire these are the next closest thing. Like most of us I am driving 99% street anway !

May i suggest to go between the two? If your looking for a good offroad tire, my pick would be (and will be, when I'm going to change my SR-A) the Pirelli Scropion ATR, in 225/65/17. OD of 28.5", which gives 1.8% speedo difference. Some members here reported some rubbing with the 235, so 225 is going to be my choice, just to be sure that it doesn't rub at all, even at full lock.
