Manual, automatic, CRD - what Patriot do you have? I have a similar issue but ONLY when first starting it in the morning and until it warms up. Thinking in my case it is something else though.

 

Chrysler transmissions have always had a ticking sound from the solenoid pack as it down shifts the gears (or in this case perhaps steps the CVT pullies). I haven't noticed anything from mine though. I'll keep an ear out on my drive in and report later.

 

As you have an 09 and your warrenty is still in effect bring it in. Better safe than sorry. Probably nothing to worry about however.

 

It is a 09 patriot 2.4L automatic. I just made an appoint with another dealership to take it in. I hate dealing with dealerships since I know they suck every dime out of you but since my car is still under warranty, I'll take it in. Will report back after I bring it back.

 

When I take the engine cover off my 2.4 it sounds like a diesel.....I think the ticking is normal for the World engines, they are notoriously noisy.

 

Same thing on my 09 FDI E model but only when it's still cold. It is like Hitzy said...sounds like a diesel until it wams up.

 

I have that too, when it's cold outside and the Jeep's been sitting for several hours. Goes away in about 10 seconds.

 

I'm reviving this thread as I tried a few products that seemed to quiet the engine noises.
Over on BITOG, upper cylinder lubes get quite a bit of praise, apparantly the ultra clean gas we get now is "dry" and the UCL helps keeps things clean and running smooth.
So far the redline Sl1 http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=80&pcid=12 has been the most impressive, providing slightly better FE and quieting the engine ticking and knocking noises. Also with our little gas tanks, I can get 7maintenance treatments out of one bottle.
The Lucas and Duralube UCL made things quieter, but I did not see any FE improvements. I don't really buy them for the FE anyway, but for the added protection.

 

I thought the manual said never to add any addatives to the oil or the fuel. I could be wrong howerver and am by no means a mechanic of any kind. Would it be good to add some of that stuff once in a while?

 

No. It's an oil pan, not an oil + additive pan.

 

Upper Cylinder Lube goes in the gas.

 

Sounds like a lifter or lifters, that's what mine has done on cold starts after sitting for a couple of days. Once the lifter gets up to pressure no more sewing machine noise. Just for info: old mechanical lifters made this noise all the time. Oh the good old days.

 

I've been having this noise too, any one find a soloution yet? or just live with a noisy when cold engine?

 

The World Engine uses solid lifters, in 16 differnt sizes, to eliminate the use of shims.
