Think my Patriot can cross this?

Here in the Atlanta area we have been having major rains for last two weeks. It has intensified in the last couple of days. We have at least a 30% chance of rain every day through the weekend (at least report I heard).

It took me 3 hours to make my way home from work this evening. Majors roads were closed (highways, state roads). Many secondary roads were also closed. My normal commute time is less than 1 hour in heavy traffic.

Lake lanier (who made the news last year in the drought) is up over 2 feet in the last 30 hours or so. It's about 4 feet below full pull now.

Lake Allatoona is almost 7 feet above full pool.

The below picture is one of the major downtown interstates. I don't have to take this road, but it shows the power of water.

Reports put flood related death toll at 5 or 6 at the time of this posting.

The question is is your basement at full pool? Yes it is very bad with rainfall totals of 15" over the past two days not uncommon. No tropical storm or remnant of a hurricane just a convergence of low pressure systems blocked by a high pressure system. South of Atlanta it has not been quite so bad as what Dan has had to deal with. Most of the roads and bridges in the area have been improved after a similar event happened in 1994 so all were passable.

The flooding continues. Part of the loop around atlanta is now closed because the chattahoochee river is cresting it. They closed it until engineers can examine it.

Lake allatoona is up another foot over my previous post 3 hours ago.
lake lanier is up almost another foot too.

I am not sure if I can find a way to the office tomorrow. I've been checking the local city and country road closures. All of my "next best" ways to get to work are closed due to bridges being flooded.

I don't see the problem why you can't cross it, all you have to do is wait for the ferry to come pick you up!:smiley_thumbs_up:

I don't think the Patriot floats too well... Which is actually a pity. Driving APCs in a lake in the Army was a hoot. :D

Maybe one of these? Or maybe kayak to work?!!

According to Jeep specs, FDII can ford up to 19" of water, so the FDI is going to be less then that (say 16" just to be safe). Of course, the biggest problem may not be how deep the water is, but whats under it. Tree limbs, poles, missing man hole covers that got hydraulically lifted...you get the point. If you can't see the bottom, or can't at least walk to path to confirm it's clear (and not too deep) I'd opt for the long way round.

Re: Floatation - Will the airbags help?

I20, the major East-West Interstate remains closed for a seven mile stretch West of Atlanta. Six Flags is now a water park.

I have a friend that was out in a canoe in his back yard. He called me while I was still driving home monday. He said that if I couldn't make it home, to call him, he'd bring the canoe and I could park my jeep and he'd ferry me across the water.

All of the roads between me and Atlanta were open this morning. My commute was actually easy. Perhaps many people are still off work due to schools being closed.

My place didn't get flooded, but, I live on a hill.

I've seen pictures from around the city, simply amazing at to look at all of that water!

I just read an article on AJC.com that they re-opened 20 in douglas county.

The last time I was in georgia a young lady after hearing my perfect English accent asked me in her southern drawl, 'Does it alway rain in England?' I replied, 'No not when the fogs about.' LOL. We've had sunshine and low 70s for the last couple of weeks, although we've just had 0.5mm of rain this evening. The weather's gone barmy.

You need one of these.

We had flooding here in Wisconsin last year and they did use the tourist ducks for evacuation.

Sometimes a vehicle that has both wheels and floats is handy.

Why are all the really cool vehicles 40 to 60 years old?

Yeah! I've been on them once. Also, they have those in Chattanooga. They take you on a little tour of downtown then out to the tennessee river for a swim. They have a nice hill they park on top, then release the brake and step on the gas! nice splash in the front.
