the story of a little puddle - Patriot saves the day!

So - please watch these videos in order!

On petbugs and my outing last weekend, we crossed a little puddle, headed down the trail and then decided to turn around.

On our way back, what do we find but an older Toyota Landcruiser stuck in the same water hole! Four younger dudes had already hooked up a come-a-long and a cable, and were working on hooking to a tree to hopefully tug them selves out.

petbug was infront of me on a narrow trail, so he didn't have a choice! He wanted to get me to pull them out with my new tires, but I refused. The stock SR-A's were to be tested! We put 70 feet of tow strap together and had the boys hook it up to the Landy, and petbug and his FDII gave a tug in reverse. We figured if the SR-A's didn't have the traction, we could swap places.

THIS IS WHY YOU NEED TOWHOOKS!

Patriot saved the day!

The little puddle wasn't all that little. There was a fairly deep hole in the middle that we didn't scope out before hitting it. Here's petbugs' first run through the hole. Of course, we had to come back too!

Now, here's the kicker! On our first pass through, I went first, and found the puddle a little too deep. I got half way through, and felt the right side drop into a hole, and the front wheels hit a wall. This was the same wall the Landcruiser was stuck against.

My buddy filming to the left of me looked me in the eye as my Jeep came to a stop in the water. His eyes bugged out, and he yelled "giver!". So I stepped on the skinny pedal and spun the wheels. 5000 rpm or so, and the Jeep crawled up the wall, and shot forward like a little rocket! You'd better not have ESP on now!

You can see the waterline in the rear passenger side - up to the top of the bumper! I think I went a little over spec. this weekend.

We decided to dig out the drainage after my run to get petbug through the hole. We were a little worried about his SR-A's, but knowing where the hole was, and dropping the water level about a foot, he pushed his way through as well, no problem!

So yes, the Landy's failed attempt was done with a foot less water than my run through. Check out the difference in water level on the sides of the last two videos compare to the rest!

The waterline on petbug, clearly above spec at the rear wheelwell, even after the water was drained

my waterline 10 minutes after crossing. This doesn't line up with the video shot from the rear. I think the water dried up before I though to take the shot.

I loved that!!!---Well done , Just goes to show what the Pat will do compared with some so Called off roaders.. May I also say very proffessional footage , Congrats to the Camera Man.

Same problem here, work doesn't like us watching videos. Good pictures and story. Glad to hear how versitile the Pat really is.

Not bad man. Now just remember, its always a good idea to check differential and transmission fluid after playing in water like that. 95% of the time it comes out clean, but the other 5% somehow you get water contamination and the gear oil needs a swap.

Been wheelin Jeeps for 10 years and have seen to many diffs low or contaminated to not do the check after a trip.

agreed. I'll be looking at it this weekend. Also going to look for any vents that might have let water in.

We did check petbugs air intake right away, because I was worried he flooded it with water, but it only had a couple drops that I wiped out.

It was I stalking the videos late at night:banana:

Just an observation when Peter was pulling the land cruiser out, i'm assuming he was in reverse with 4x4 locked. It sure sounded like the Pat was reving up but not spinning the tires as much as I would have expected it to, it looked like the surface was rather slick but I could only see the passenger front wheel. It almost reminded me of how every once in a while that stupid no rev problem comes up.

I don't think anyone has answered this question in the past. When in reverse, can a 4x4 Patriot be in 4WD? Or does it revert only to FWD? On my XJ--and I know the 4WD systems in the two vehicles are different--I am only in 2WD in reverse.

Good, glad to hear you're on top of it.

One other thing my cherokee buddies do is fab up a pvc "hot air intake" for offroading where water can be deep. Its more or less a short intake to a cone filter that sits far back and up high in the engine compartment. It doesnt do much for hp, you dont lose much either, but you pretty much eliminate the chance of getting water in your intake and ruining the engine.

This is something that they will swap on, leaving the stock air box in place just moving the oem intake tube from the throttle body.

Can you get "slingshot" tow-ropes in America? They're sort of bungey-ropes. You attach them and rush backwards and the stored up energy intensifies your pulling ability almost launching the towed vehicle forwards. They're expensive, and they need constant checking, but they give a small light-weight vehicle one hell of an increased recovery power.

Now that's Patriotism!

Appleton, do you mean that trail specifically? If so, we turned around soon after it started going downhill. Do you know if it continues on in a similar style, or does it go steep and crazy? Would like to continue down it next time.

We also ran into two other lifted XJ's that kind of looked like they were wondering what the hell two Patriots were doing here.

:smiley_thumbs_up:that is a really good vid of what the pat can do. Im very impressed that with the stock tires you guys could get any traction to pull the land rover out.:smiley_thumbs_up::smiley_thumbs_up:

Toyota Landcruiser. I made the same ID error, but I'm sure a Landrover would have made through no problem.

in fact, I'll bet it was driver error that got him stuck, not the vehicle he was in. had I let go of the skinny pedal, I probably would have been swimming too.

And since a lot of people seem to want to compare vehicles without noting other possible differences, I'd just like to point out that tires make a big difference too!
