Does anyone know how many splits is safe to run? I would like to run 3 items.can I safely do 2 cellphones and an mp3 simultaneously and not blow a fuse?

i wouldnt be concerned about blowing a fuse with cellphones/mp3 player etc..
those draw low amps,
i would be concerned with putting too much on single line of wire,
cig lighter uses a very light gauge wire, if it that wire overheats/burns out you wont see/notice it till its too late,

A point to remember: Circuits are fused to protect the wiring, not the appliance. So, if you were to place too heavy a current draw, the fuse should go before the wire does.

I run my aftermarket head unit from the dash socket power wire via a splice and additionally I have splitters plugged in up front that run my hand held scanner charger, my cell phone charger and my dash camera.

Additionally I have a satellite phone charger but that replaces one of the others when I need to use it.

The head unit is always on, either USB stic or radio, the dash cam is always on and quite often both chargers are working at the same time.

But always radio and dash cam...

I did check it once when I was waiting for the mail to bring me my dash kit, I was running around with the front bezel removed. Very scientifically I reached in and pinched the socket power wire between my highly calibrated finger and thumb and felt no heat.

I've been running this configuration and that load for a year now...five days a week, 5 hours a day, lots of stop and start, lots of times with all four running. No problems.

If it freaks you out why not install an inline fuse and then all the crap we need powered? Fuse will go long before any wires will.

Another thing you can consider is there are cigar lighter plugins that have TWO usb charger ports--so you can do your phone and mp3 player too. I have a plug in splitter, that I use one port for my extra fans in the rear for the dog, then the dual usb so everything can be charged. Have had no problem and I think my fans pull maybe a whole amp--for both of them, and I believe most basic usb chargers only do 1,000ma each side, altho my Kindle has a fast charger port of 2 amp. Even so, 3-4 amps is nothing when the circuit is fused at (I believe...) 15 amps?!

Yeah it's a 15 or 20 amp fuse on that line. You can run a lot of smaller electronics on that no problem. :)

I use a splitter for my Garmin and cell phone charger. I've used splitters in 3 cars up to this point and never had a problem. Rather than burning up the wires, you'd probably blow a fuse. The fuse is designed to be the weakest point and it should blow before any damage is done to the wiring. That's why there are fuses.

Bought that one...I don't like wires and had the bend I was looking for. Plus good reviews and cheap!

If it is a real cig lighter I would not worry, most lighters are wired with 10 or 12 gauge wire.(the smaller the number the thicker the wire) I believe the headlights are 14 gauge and they are usually 55 watts. Don't forget a lighter is like a toaster, albeit for a shorter amount of time, but takes a lot of power.

if you want to be sure just verify the watts your device requires and use the following formula. (just remember the car is 12 volts)

Divide the power rating (in watts) by the voltage (in volts). So if you use a 100 watt light bulb in a typical 110 volt lamp then it will draw 100/110 = .91 amps of current. Or plug a 1500 watt electric heater into a 110 volt wall socket and it will draw 1500/110 = 13.6 amps of current.

Hope this helps

i dont recall what gauge the cig lighter wiring is,
when i spliced into it was definately not 10-12 gauge,
was similar to individual wiring you would find if you spliced into a telephone line, whatever gauge that is, closer to 20 gauge
