Hey all, I have never really posted on these forums before. I've been more of a lurker. I just wanted to post about my experience with my Jeep Patriot. I bought mine used in 2009, was a 2008 model and had 18k miles on it already. It lived a good life until Dec. 20th, 2015 with 99,650 miles on the clock. The reason for its abrupt end was a major car accident. Basically 70mph, clipping a u-haul van and sent flying through the air rolling 7 or 8 times before meeting its final resting place. Reason I am posting here today, is rather simple. Jeep designed the Patriot to act basically like a roll cage, hence why I am able to make this post here today.

2008 Jeep 4x2 Patriot Sport
-2.4L with CVT transmission
-K&N replacement filter, minor exhaust upgrades, and ported cylinder head.

Fast forward to today, and very different picture

My Patriot may be retired, but a new Jeep will soon fill its place. I purchased a 2016 Jeep Cherokee Altitude as my replacement vehicle.

no injuries, other than my hand which is swollen pretty bad, but not broken, and my shoulder where the seat belt slammed into me.

Wow...Glad you are OK! what happened? Also, you did get a great new rig in the Cherokee!
short story
- traveling 65mph on hwy just doin my thing trying to get home.
-U-haul van wants to cross the road to get to the other side, well he didn't look both ways before crossing and decided to cross the hwy when my car was right there so that's how my jeep ended up in its fate. I didn't have time to hit the brakes, nor did i have space to go around the van. I served to avoid a head on collision into the side of this van, and managed to clip its front end off with my drivers side fender, but since i was traveling at a high rate of speed kinda ricochet off the van and then proceed to roll.

I hope the cherokee is as good as a vehicle as my patriot was. I almost bought another Patriot, but the deals on the Cherokee were just too good right now.

WOW. YOu are lucky to walk away from that one. Mass usually wins! I got hit head on on the highway and walked away. I was in my 92 F150 and they were in a Hyundai elantra, they were not so lucky. Driver (I graduated with him) had a broken hip and pelvis, and his mother in the passenger seat had her face crushed when the car decided to deform. I had burns from the airbag, even though I never even hit it. I saw it coming and braced, never DO that! Everything happens in slow motion. Watch an airbag inflate and deflate on youtube its instentanious, I watched it come out, stay inflated for like 20 seconds and deflate again!

I am happy the patriot kept its shape through that! I feel safe with my family in there!

Wow-glad you survived and not too much damage to you. I am amazed as everything I have read said the Patriot is rated low for safety and especially the driver's position. Anyhow, I just bought one Nov. 7th and am really happy with it and won't be too concerned about the safety now. "My Patriot may be retired, but a new Jeep will soon fill its place. I think you will enjoy your new Cherokee and join the KL forum and looks me up if you want, as I also have a 2015 Cherokee TH and enjoy both vehicles.

I'm glad you're OK, but sorry to hear about your Patriot. Rental vans are often driven by very inexperienced drivers who are distracted simply by the size of the truck. They are enjoying the experience of being the biggest thing on the road and forget about simple safety stuff. They take corners too tight or too wide and forget about the overhead clearance even though there are warning stickers all over it.

Same thing with RVs--If someone was to deliver merchandise to a store they have to have at least a DOT card and usually a CDL, but anyone is qualified to drive a motor home just for buying it.

Again, I'm glad you're OK. I think you've proven that Patriots are pretty safe vehicles. Be careful out there!

For sure. Prius is such a ridiculous car. I guess that's why celebs flock to them. I'm saving the environment. Little do they know, that between trying to dispose of the highly toxic battery after its wore out, and the fact that ground where the battery inners are mined in Sudbury Ont, Nasa uses it as a test bed as the earth is so damaged....

MORONS. My JK is more environmentally friendly. Even though I burn a few more gallons of gas.
