Poor Mileage - 2011 Patriot Limited

OK...I've been reviewing everyone else's mileage and I am not getting anywhere near that. I have a 2011 Patriot Limited, 2.4L with the CVT.

Currently my fuel economy on the computer shows 11.5L/100 km which is roughly 20.45MPG. On a good day when I'm not driving the car hard I can get 24 MPG but that is only on the highway with cruise set. Typically I am in the 10.5L/100 KM area which 22.5 MPG.

Also, I typically only get about 425 kms out of a tank (265 miles).

I have taken the car in twice now to complain about the significant rattle from the engine or CVT on acceleration and rough shifts at low speed. The dealer tells me this is normal operation but I don't buy it, especially with the poor fuel economy I'm seeing. Thoughts?

24mpg poor mileage... your car is new, and hasn't been broken in yet. i get 22-23 average with my sport rxr cvt as well you getting normal plus it's better then my old wrangler 15mpg downhill with the wind.

22mpg is what i got average till i hit 20k on my patriot I wouldnt be to concerned. you can check your tire pressure, and air cleaner and how much weight are you usual carrying?

I agree that 425kms on a fillup is not a whole lot. I get 515-525kms on about 46L city/highway. I must also add that I am not an aggressive driver. Re: The rattle on acceleration. While the idoling sound of the 2.4 is not really pretty, I fail to agree with your dealer's comment "this is normal" for rattling to occur upon acceleration.

I have 5K on my beast and I get 24.5 mixed, 28 on the highway. It still has some rough shifts when I slow down. Accelerates fine. It's not a race car. It's an underpowered SUV. I wish they had a turbo version but they don't.

You're getting 2 MPG less than I do and I don't know your driving habits. If you expect to put your foot into it and still get 30 MPG, it's not going to happen. Trade it or a Prius.

I get about 20-21 mpg in the city with my '11 5-speed FDI, but I tend to lay into the pedal a bit. That's still way better than the 9-10 mpg I was getting in the Durango if I didn't drive like an old man wearing a hat.

I'm getting around 23 mpg on a 2011 FWD with a 5 speed. Just turned 1500 miles on the clock. I was hoping for 25 but it still beats my 2000 Cherokee at 14 mpg.

I have a 2011 too and Im in the same ballpark. These figures are definitaly lower than previous years. Do you think the 2011 Patriot have worst fuel economy ? .I personally think the 2011 model is thirsty aqnd that the fuel economy is worst.

I have a 2011 4x2 with the CVT. I am approaching 7k miles. My last tank of fuel was 25.5 mpg. I expect it to go a little bit higher as I get a few more miles on it. Still cant say I am use to the CVT.

On a side note I am sure I would get way better gas mileage if my route to work wasn't as hilly or as stop and go as it is.

I have the 2011 Latitude with FDII and the CVT of course. I just hit 6K on the odemeter and im averaging 21mpg and about 250 miles per tank. I also changed out my stock SRA's for bigger/heavier Hankook tires. All in all i think its pretty good mpg for a 4x4 SUV. As previously stated by many, its much better than my JK Unlimited where i was only getting about 215 miles per tank with a 20 gallon gas tank....

The MPG DOES get better as you put on miles. I was getting about 23 last summer, now Im getting 25, with some tanks going 27. Seems to depend alot on weather and how I drive. Hot with the A/C on I get 23.5. The odd feeling on de-accelleration is the CVT. It takes some getting used to.

It does have odd deceleration, sometimes feels like it's in a low gear and slows well, and sometimes feels like it's higher gear. Would be nice to be able to control that, which I guess the folks with the autos they can shift do.

I find I use my brakes less often than with other vehicles though, and a lot of the steep hills I'm on I can just take my foot off the gas as I peak the summit and drift the downhill without using my brakes. 72K miles and brakes are still ok.

We've found that mileage does improve after about 5-10K miles, so hopefully you folks with 2011's will see that. Take a while for the computer to get to know your driving habits, and if you things like slow starts, not pushing the gas too much, etc, it gets used to it and mileage improves.

Some of the differences we see could be fuel too, I know I get better mileage on the winter mix of fuel we have here, but in warmer temps, like warm fall and spring days. Then they change to the summer mix, and that's not quite as good.

I pass on hills, and pull into highway traffic a lot, so on the gas with high RPMs, but take my foot of the gas early for red lights, drift down hills, and other things to get my average of 23MPG.

Thanks for all the feedback folks. My 2011 Patriot Limited is the CVT 4x4 model, not the FDII. I already have 15K on it (joys of having 2 kids who are competitive hockey goalies as per my user name).

I don't drive the vehicle overly hard but the best I have been able to ever get is about 470km out of a tank. Ill get a new air filter on it and have the vehicle checked at my next service. Thanks.

I usually get 23-26mpg depending on weather and other conditions, but I have the 2008 2x4 with 2.4L CVT.

As far as those "rough shifts" go, the CVT seems to engage/disengage differently than your standard "slushbox", especially on the deceleration.

I've noticed a distinct two-stage acceleration process, with the initial acceleration phase using higher RPMs until a certain point, at which time the CVT transitions its ratio to a lower-RPM, longer-sustained second acceleration phase. That took some getting used to. You can accelerate through the "shift"-point if you want to, but then you lose that precious mileage that we all are seeking more of these days.

During deceleration, the CVT seems to keep the engine engaged as you get slower and slower until an almost awkard release to a free coast. It's really helpful if you're trying not to use your brakes, but it can be disconcerting until you get a better feel for a smoother deceleration method.

I have a new 2011 4x4 as well but with FDII. I'm mostly doing freeway driving (130 miles daily) and getting at least 24 mpg (25 best so far). I do just cruise along, however, and do the speed limit with little to no a/c use. I do my best to anticipate traffic conditions with as minimal braking as possible and almost always keep the rpms under 3k. Surprisingly, these driving habits have gotten me from work to home in about the same amount of time as it took racing in and out of traffic with my Mustang GT.

I'm getting lower economy than I had expected. I'm experimenting with my driving habits to see if I can get decent mileage without getting run over in traffic. I must say, I am getting 20 in the city which is what it is rated at, and I hit 23 mpg once on the highway. Still, I think it can do better

I am however very impressed with the capability.

i have a 2011 4x4 5 speed...you get better mileage with the 5 speed....i average 29-30 hwy going 65-70.... in the city around 24 ...but i usually keep my acceleration low and shift just above 2000 rpms.... rpms are low at highway speed below 3000. i average 340 a tank all hwy.....300 mix.

Same here

I'm in the same ballpark. I think there is nothing wrong with your Jeep. I can hit 500-520 km per tank on highways trip only. Otherwise, 420 is pretty much the norm. If you look at my fuelly profile, you'd see that its improving slowly but steadily. Keep the faith!

17 MPG

I have a 2011 Patriot with 2.4L, CVT, 2900 miles, and only FWD. It gets 17MPG in town and 27 to 29 on the highway. I don't have a heavy foot in town. I'm very disapointed with it. My Cherokee with 4WD get 19MPG in town. If it does not "break in" and get better miliage I will trade it in next summer.

Are you using the EVIC to get that data? Or do you actually drive a couple days in town and then fill up?
