Was at the dealership, checking out my future Commander, and thought it was funny how similar the Commander and Patriot are. It's like the Patriot is just a mini-Commander. Ha.

Look at the body lines, the shape of the grille, the bumper/lights locations, etc.

The two definitely appear to have been designed by the same pen. The shape is the same, the lines are the same. Even the shoulder ridge that runs from the top of the front fender to the rear is the same. The turn signals up front are the same shape and in the same location.

It isn't hard to mistake a Commander for a Patriot, despite the obvious size differential. The shapes are incredibly similar.

Caramba! you read my mind Akula... This is what I was about to post.

Yesterday my mom said: "Hey! look a white Patriot, but I like your grille and your headlights more". Obviously it was a Commander. Poor mom...

The only thing i would like from a Commander in my Patriot is the mineral gray metallic color.

I took a Commander home(250 miles worth) from the dealership for a long weekenk. I ended up taking it back for three reasons:
a) It was too big for the wife to drive as a replacement for her 01 Grand'.
b) If I was going to use it as a daily driver, the 305 hp GEN II 4.6 in the 08's is the way to go and the 3rd row seating was not interesting to me. The word is that there will be a SPORT EDITION available mid 08 with the GEN II 4.6 in 2 row seating and "Quadra Drive"..............Now that will be a sweet rig, with the exception of not being rear IRS(independant rear suspension), dang'it!!!!
c)I wanted a 25 mpg full independant suspension Jeep to tool on for a while.

Other than those reasons, the Commander is a great Jeep, It reminds the wife of the Dodge Cummins we had. Lots of room and the interior is nice.

"4.6"??? maybe you mean the 4.7L ????? didn't know Mopar HAD a 4.6L ANYTHING:confused:

....."honey, they shrunk the commander"..........:D
now THAT'S funny!!!! :D

I wouldn't mind the HEMI, either. :pepper:
DUH! who wouldn't? i was just thinking on the way home from work last night how nice it would be to even have the "4.7L" V8 in my Compass. now that would be one "Kickass Compass"....;)

Saw my first 08 Liberty today! It looks soo close to a Patriot - especially from the side- but with more of the commander front end (sorta). I had to look twice before I realized it was a liberty and not a patriot or a commander. It didn't have the new sunroof, so I didn't get to see that inperson. I wish I had had my camera!! Maybe next time it'll be there and I can grab some shots and post em!

It worries me a little too, don't want them dropping the patriot line or deciding not to do a patriot CRD with these cosmetic similarities....

When I was looking at Jeeps I considered a Commander because the incentives for it caused only a $9000 spread between the two. The interior appointments of the Commander were amazing. The mpg sucked but what REALLY sucked in the Commander was the 6th & 7th passenger seating in the rear. They are just seats on the cargo bed really. There is no footwell!!!. Then if you want to use the back to stow cargo, you must place that cargo on top of that seat. This means you are lifting your groceries to not just past the bumper like in other Jeeps, you have to lift beyond the thickness of the folded down rear seat as well. Not a great design at all. The rear seat would suit a baby or toddler in a car seat at best.

I found the best in class for 7 passenger seating to be the Mazda CX-9. It was excellent in passenger room - blew away the Acura MDX, GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook and especially the Commander.

i'm TOTALLY confused by this....how can one compare the Commander to the Patriot? it's like comparing a Lincoln to a Fusion. the only common thread they have is they both have FOUR DOORS. you complain that the Commander had NO footroom for the rear seating area. so, tell me how much footroom does your Patriot have for it's 6th and 7th passenger? WHAT? you can't even GET 6-7 people in a Patriot? you're very lucky to get 5?

for me, i TOO would have loved to have the Commander with all the extra room, with or without the extra seating. BUT the MPG's do suck, even for the 3.7L (i may as well kept my Unlimited).....SO i decided an MK was the way to go. i chose the Compass over the Patriot because of the 'nicer' base model. i HATE vinyl seats!

Help with Photoshop

Someone please take that first photo of the Commander beside the Patriot and clone the headlights onto the Patriot from the Commander, so it will look like a tiny Liberty.

It seems like we already have the correct little angle cut in the plastic grill piece that would accomodate this change for later maybe 3 years from now when they need to make model update anyway.

I really wanted a Commander. However, they need to offer a 5 speed transmission and a version of the vehicle with low end appeal like the 25D package in the Patriot. Jeep needs to recapture the idea where the vehicles are actually useful. Vehicles where you can throw firewood of garden supplies in the car and not worry about the fact that the car cost more than your first house. The Commander must be offered with a diesel to get the mileage up to an acceptable level.

compass - 1 series - A series

patriot - 3 series - C series

liberty - 5 series - E series

commander - 7 series - S series

just a lil comparison to European cars :p

If you're looking at Patriot and CMDR, I think with the financial incentives, you can get a Cmdr for about $2k (or less) more than the Patriot, however, there is the MPG factor, and it does take more space in traffic and the garage!

Thank you, for the photoshopping

Not only that, but if you "roll your own" and get just the combo of options you want, you also get this cool dealer sticker that says the car was made for you! Very cool to have, especially when the Patriot becomes a collectors car 30 years from now.
