From Chrysler news release....

Although the Patriot is now in production in Belvidere, it doesn’t mean the launch is over for the more than 3,600 people working on three shifts. Ewasyshyn said the plant has only integrated 66 percent of the Caliber, Compass and Patriot models.

The Caliber is fully integrated, but workers haven’t started producing diesel versions of the Compass, which is key for the European market, and so far only the left-hand drive Patriot is coming off the line. They still need to introduce the right-hand drive and diesel versions.

Before the Caliber was released there was a statement attributed to DCX saying that they had an agreement with VW to supply diesel engines for the Caliber but as part of this arrangement DCX was not permitted to offer the VW diesel in the US market. I can see why VW would want this. They need all the sales they can get in the US. Europe on the other hand would be less of an concern because Dodges and Jeeps are probably few in number over there. In addition I suspect there might be supply problems as well. If this is in fact the case, forget about a Patriot diesel for the immediate future.

I stopped by a local dealer yesterday to see what they had heard on the Patriot front and to see if there were any brochures... zip on both counts. They would take my order but could enter it for at least another month and weren't expecting them to hit their lot for another 2-3 months. Man, was I bummed.

We checked out the Wrangler 4door and diesel Liberty with just under 100 miles on it. It was too expensive though... over the $30K mark. That's about 150% the market price I am thinking... it might be the going rate but its not my price range.

I called my local dealer and they said that they would have 2-3 on site by the end of the month. He also said if I knew what I wanted that they would take an order.

Obvisously I can wait till I see one in person.

I may wait a year and get a one year old 4 door Wrangler cuz I can't afford a new one with what I want.

The 4-door Wrangler is impressive. I just wish they stuck the 3.0L diesel in it. Of course the rubber hood pad fell off when I checked out the engine. I would trade in my 97 Wrangler if I purchased a 4-door Wrangler. If I purchase a Patriot I would keep my older Wrangler for playing in the dirt.

In any case the dealer was of the opinion it would be 2-3 months before they had a supply of Patriots on site and it would be about six months before initial demand was met.
