Hi,

I have a 2008 2.0 CRD Patriot and I am having trouble with the battery. After 4 days of leaving in my garage the car will not fire up and the battery is flat.
I have spoken to Chrysler Jeep in the UK and they say that this is quite normal.
I want to gop on holiday and have to leave my car in an airport for 2 weeks.
This will mean that I cannot use this car.
Has anybody got any ideas or experience like this because it seems ridiculous in this day and age.
Please help - your replies would be gratefull received.

" 2Weeks" ??? Never!!---- Battery may be a little low after 4 months --WHo is you dealer??? Someone is telling you a load of Bollocks mate!!

Yes...bollocks. Loads and loads of bollocks. There is now way a battery should be flat in 4 days. There is a drain somewhere (as the hitzman said).

BOLLOCKS!!!

That isn't right. Find somebody who will diagnose the problem.

Failing in that, one of those jumpstart packs could be tossed in the back; they're fairly inexpensive. Given how trouble usually only hits the unprepared, having one in the vehicle virtually guarantees unlimited battery life...

Sounds like the forward control module is staying awake when it should turn itself off after the Jeep is turned off-I would have the dealership check for any flashes the pertain to the forward control module and dead batteries.
Tom
I know that there is a flash for forward control modules just not sure for which Jeep-this was a recall that stated the radio was staying on after the Jeep was turned off draining the battery.
The forward control module is attached to the underhood distribution center.

sounds like nonsense
have left cars for weeks and batteries have been fine
can even go months,
absurd to think its the norm for batteries to die for being left unattended for a few days

as for battery packs
they are generally hit or miss as to whether they work,
work best when left charged in the wall, and used immediately
they dont work too well when left unplugged for days/weeks

Tell 'em you want the Service Manager or you want to use their phone to ring Chrysler. I know fellers who have left convertibles ('cos don't forget, they're a summer-only luxury in northern climes) for weeks on end in out-buildings over the winter, having forgotten to remove and trickle the battery, and there's still a meagre residual charge left in them. Everybody's in agreement; the sales guy is talking out of his exhaust.
They'll come out with any old bollix. My friend took a Freelander into the LandRover agents to complain about a "pup-pup-pup-pup" noise from a front wheel. They found that the tyre had worn slightly hexagonal! Only slightly, but enough to make the noise. The salesman at Stratstones said that (now wait for this .......) "this does tend to be a bit of a feature on these cars"!
A feature! I suppose like metallic paint or krypton fog-lamps or two-swing sun-roof or....

Buy a cheap multimeter (volts, ohms, m-amps) at your local electronics store ($15.) and set it to milliamps. Put it between the + battery post and the + battery cable. You should read less than 100ma. (I'm guessing here because I have not checked my Pat, but I have checked my '98 Grand.) I bet you will see a high reading. Start pulling fuses for radio and other accessories one at a time until the reading drops to normal. (This is the computer drain.) Whatever fuse drops the reading below 100ma has the short in it. My son's Nissan did the same thing (4 days and then a dead battery). He went to the dealer twice and bought two batteries with no help. I found out the battery draw was high and pulling fuses led me to the radio. Turns out he had a stuck CD in the player. He went to the dealer with this info and they had to replace the radio because the CD would stick in the player each time. Don't let then give you the run around!

my 2 optima yellow top batterys use to die after not starting the camaro for about 5-6 days in the winter. but when i disconnected them, i could leave it for 2-3 weeks, and they would be fine. but ye, your dealer is full of Sh**. those optima batteries are expensive as hell, but there definitely worth it. the battery isnt holding its charge i think. my patriots battery is usually fine after starting it about 3-4 days later, starts right away.

That is really Bull. You have something that is not turning off and they need to check it out. I once had a rear window defroster that was faulty (Toyota Corolla wagon) and draining the battery when the car was shut down. Took them a long time to find it, but find it they did!

Bottom line... dealer is full of crap. Take it in and talk to a service manager. If they insist, have them test the system. I believe that the test take about 1/2 hour to an hour but they should detect any drain (which is obviously what is happening). Have them give you a loaner battery while they test yours and have them keep it overnight.

If that doesn't work, start coughing and tell them that you have been coughing since your trip to Mexico... They'll give you what you want REAL quick.
