Well, it's not easy to control. These spammers create new e-mails left and right and they sign up and do their postings. It's not only here... On my gaming forum we have the same problem. I believe we were able to control some of it by restricting access based on IP addressess but there is not just one guy out there doing this. It is a strategy used by thousands all with different and unique IP's.

How about active members.......?
There are only 1920 -/+ members with 5 posts or more.
There are 600 -/+ recorded members with 5 to 10 posts. Granted several of those are new members from today or yesterday.
There are 1500 -/+ members with fewer than 100 posts.
There are 270 -/+ members with 101 to 999 posts.
There are 24 members with 1000 or more posts. including the dreaded e-bay bot.

There's one guy who just won't shut up. ;)

Congratulations. Those numbers, above, are about right for many forums. At the Nest we clean out after a year any non-posting members so our percentages are higher while our membership appears smaller. Some rejoin many do not.

spammers are a challenge on any forum, unfortunately they keep thinking that somebody is stupid enough to fall for their list of one million cell phones for $5.00 or something lol

I just realized that I'm edging in on 1000 posts here too! And I don't even have a Patriot!

Joined Last Week

Hi,
I joined last week when I was looking for information regarding a mod I was planning on doing. (The info I found was a great help. Thanks!) Anyhow, I manage the website for the company I work for, and we've considered creating a forum. How big of a problem is spam? What percentage of traffic on this forum is spam? I haven't seen much during my time here compared to some other forums I use. What service do you use to host this forum?

Spam isn't a huge issue here because we're still relatively small (as far as forums go). Some of the larger forums spend a nice chunk of money on software designed to eliminate spammers but at our level, I dont think it would be very cost effective.
