Had my patriot back for the 5th time for sunroof leak. I talked to their leak specialist. I explained to him where I saw water coming in. It was coming in all around the rubber seal on the sunroof. He asked if the water got on the seats or dash or anywhere else. I said not this time but the other 4 times it did. Well he said and I quote "Water is supposed to leak in." "The drainage system is there to catch any water coming in." Sunroofs on this model and the compass do not completely keep all water out. All auto companies do it different. Some have good tight seals and good drainage and some don't. I told him that this is unacceptable and had I known this I would not have bought one with a sunroof. Everyone that I know who has a car with a sunroof laughed at this and said it is crazy to spend all that money on a vehicle that is supposed to leak.

if the leaks are a design feature, why don't they advertise them as such? charge us extra for the water? and rename them water-roofs?

reading all the posts about leaky roofs, it does seem to be a poorly designed element of our Patriots. Jeep should really have a good re-design and fix the problem - but they won't

i'm guessing what the leak guy meant is that manufacturers acknowledge that the external seal between glass and metal is not perfect and that some water makes it past the external skin, but surely that's when the drain tubes/catch things should kick in and drain the water away to the ground, preventing the water entering the cabin where the humans live.

Let's see, they have a leak specialist, yet the sunroof is supposed to leak. Hmmm, I think I know where Jeep could save a few bucks on the labor front. :icon_rolleyes:

If it's suppose to leak, then why put a piece of glass in the sunroof spot, could save more $$ there too.

talk about timing! I just went through a touchless wash today to test out how well the Vegas Dealer fixed my Sunroof. Once the high pressure wash kicked in, I saw water leaking in only on the Left side! I also could hear a lot of water flowing down through the doors (normal draining I believe, as no water entered the Jeep). I was flipping out at the amount of water that was coming in up there! BUT, the water never dripped into the inside on a seat or anything. Once I got through the wash, I opened my sunroof and checked everything out up there. The water was gone. It wasn't leaking in at all through any dome lights either. I did finally find the drain hole that was up there! It's towards the front in the corner. I guess that is what they mean, "It's suppose to leak"

That's why the drain holes are there; to drain the water that goes past the seal between the roof and the glass and is captured in the pan. A high pressure car wash is going to get water past the seal. It's not made for that kind of water volume or pressure. Be careful at the car wash even sunroofs that have no problems during rain seem to leak at times.

I spoke with my dealer and he said similar thing about it suppossed to leak into the area. But then the overflow plate, which is the metal pan it to catch any over flow. Then there are rubber tubes to bring the water out, They are located it the 4corner frame. It should work as a siphin, yet if parked at a slant, or in any way not flat it can not work properly.

I think this is exactly why my front dome light leaked during an all day rain storm! I was parked on a grade with the front facing down it (right where the street drain was actually). I've never since had that bad of a leak (also haven't seen rain like that since).

I've had my Pat since May 25th 2009, just a few months back. We have had a crappy summer with LOTS of rain, and "touch wood" not one drop of rain has come thru my Sunroof ..or anywhere else for that matter.

Those sunroof drain tubes "vent" into the rear hatch area. You can see 2 large rubber stoppers with a hole in the middle near the hatch support rods..thats where the water from around the sunroof is supposed to "exit" from by way of those vent tubes....

I'm thinking that every once in a while, why not use a shop vac and give those tubes a vacuum, which should draw any crap from within those tubes, keeping them free and clear to allow the excess water to drain away?????

:smiley_thumbs_up:

Hmm. if what this guy is saying is true, my Patriot is defective! I have had no leaks of any sort, anywhere for over 2 years.

I can just picture it. Walking in to my dealer and saying I have a complaint. Why isn't my sunroof leaking like it is supposed to? If I wanted DRY I would have bought a Patriot without a sunroof!

Oh pu-leeze.

I have the moonroof on my Patriot no leaks so far knock on wood, we got a really have thunderstorm earlier this week and it made it thru dry. I would tell this guy who says its supposed to leak to start seeking new employment cause your going to do everything you can to get his ass fired. Maybe if he explained the fact that it leaks into the cavity and drains out then fine but no water should enter the vehicle PERIOD.

My Patriot's sunroof has never leaked since day 1 on April 14, 2007. It is kept outside and the past year has seen major damaging storms in the area much to the chagrin of insurance companies to pay for replacement roofs.

If that is the case, all compass and Patriot models should be clearly marked...........

CAUTION! MKs are getting in touch with their CJ roots. Roofs may leak!

Or, In an effort to create a more traditional Jeep experience, new Jeeps have leaky roofs. Enjoy!

And that's why I dubbed my major leak the "rear dome water feature."

I had water coming in through my sunroof, A pillars and all three domes. The sunroof was fixed pretty quickly with replacing kinked drain tubes and replacing the seal. That cleared up the front and middle dome as well as the A pillar.

The rear dome took many more trips into the dealer...turns out water was coming in all down the sides of my roofline. Welding occured and I've been dry since.

My theory is that they've got all my patience until the warranty runs out. Then we'll start talking about lemon laws.
