Maintenance

My wife has a 2008 Patriot with 47,xxx miles on it. I have changed the engine oil and filter routinely, changed the air filter and topped off the fluids. Just got new tires so those are good. I think its time to change out the transmission fluid. Should I do a transmission service or just flush the fluid?

What other maintenance items am I forgetting?

The reason its sealed is because if you get one millilitre of the wrong fluid in there or one speck of grit you will absolutely and very quickly ruin the transmission.

I put my own band aids on but if I need open heart surgery I go see a doctor.
All fine to change oil, filters, spark plugs but the transmission is best left to those who know how and have the proper space and tools.

Honest.

First off, is it the manual or the automatic (CVT)?

For the Manual, check the owners manual for the proper type of fluid (i think it's Chrysler ATF+4 but don't quote me on that).

If it's the CVT, the fluid does not need to be changed until 120k miles so you don't need to do anything (unless you've used the vehicle for fleet, taxi/police or lots of towing, in which case change it at 60k miles).

That being said, you can absolutely change the CVT fluid outside of the dealer, but you'll need a dealer tool to check that you have added the correct amount of fluid back in (and you can purchase the tool). You will also need to purchase the CVT+4 fluid either from the dealer, or off the internet and it's not cheap either way. You can purchase the trans filter and gasket also from the dealer.

When checking the fluid level, you need to know the fluid temperature and get a copy of the temp-to-level graph. The dealer dipstick tool has centimeter graduations on it so at a certain temp, you should read so many CM of fluid.

Must have changed the service rules for 2008 because I have an original 2007 and my book requires the CVT changed at 60,000 miles. That's everyone and not just the fleet stuff. I had a whole thread about my 60,000 mile service experience a couple months back.

Yes, let's take it easy guys. Please see the first quote in my signature by Bill. Sometimes intent and tone get's lost in a text message, let's try to remember that.

Couesfanatic, The owners manual is your best bet for the maintenance schedule and you can download an electronic one right from www.jeep.com under the owners link (top right corner I think).
