yeah i got the locking gas cap a long time ago. and its super expensive with the locksmith fee. i ended up paying around 175$

 

All I can say is I bought the MotorRAD from Canadian tire, it was like 25 bucks. The gas cap sucks, you will get check engine light after like a month of using it. Swapped it out for another one. Same issue. So I returned it for a refund. So dont bother with that particular one. The Mopar one apparently is fine.

This is the good one.. They can cut the Key for your VIN!

I cant comment if the 2 above are good or not as I havent used them. But i remember other users on the forum with the MOPAR cap with the custom keys having no issues at all.

the reason i payed more is because i wanted it keyed to the ignition key. Its worth the extra i think.

 

so i just got a 2013.

is there a locking gas cap for it that isn't more than 30$?


i will not pay the crazy dealer price for the keyed to ignition one. I don't want that one. i just want the one with it's own key. Will one for a 2011 work? Those seem to be available.

You don't need a lock smith, Usually they'll send it ready to be keyed. All you do is insert your ignition key and turn to the left and that's it. Very easy to do but also easy to screw up if you don't follow directions. I paid about 60.00 and it was for the original Mopar gas cap.

 

I seem to remember someone on this forum stating that there is a mechanism in the fill tube that keeps the gas from being siphoned out, so a locking gas cap isn't necessary.

 

Yup, I have seen that as well...anti-siphon mechanism in the filler tube.

 

i found that carquest has a locking gas cap for my 2013. Though it said 2012 and they had nothing listed for 2013.

you see any problems with the cap for the 2012? I mean nothing back there would have changed, right?

 

seems to me that the part number on mopar is the same for 2007-2014 so the same should hold true for the aftermarket caps.

am i thinking right?

 

Funny thing, I traded a 2005 liberty in for my 2011 patriot and kept the locking gas cap from it and it fit! Its an aftermarket (stant) one has its own seperate key. I'm pretty sure we got it fairly inexpensive from a meijer/Walmart.

Stant 10508 locking fuel cap is what you might want. They can be had for less than $15-20 on ebay. I overpaid for mine. It was a whole whopping $19!

 

got the carquest stant version for $18 for a 2012- i have a 2013. Put on and no lights or anything. It works....
