Jeep Patriot reliability - how does it compare?

In late 2005 I started conducting my own reliability research. I'm reporting absolute stats like "times in the shop" that will make the differences between cars much clearer. Relative ratings obscure too much--how large is the difference between "better than average" and "worse than average"? I’ll also be updating results four times a year, so there will be information on new models sooner.

I see DMAG is involved in this forum. I continue to appreciate his help over at lxforums--many LX owners have been participating as a result. I also have had very active participation from Dodge Caliber owners. (Repair rates were a bit high at first, but they've come down.) I'm hoping for similar participation by Jeep Patriot owners.

To encourage participation, panel members will receive full access to the results free of charge.

Thanks for bringing us into the mix Michael. I definitely recommend everyone signs up at TrueDelta. Its gives prospective buyers the "true" story behind how reliable cars are straight from their owners, not from a third party evaluation like CR.

Those results have been posted. The repair rate for the 2008 is a little higher than the 2007, on the high end of average rather than the low end of average, but this could be due to the small sample size.

Overall, reliability looks close to the average, maybe a bit better.

Additional participants would enable us to get rid of that asterisk and provide a more precise result.

Updated results soon.

We're currently two responses short of the minimum with the 2008.

For either year, if you've signed up to participate but haven't yet responded to the survey (via a link in the email you received), please do. And if you haven't signed up yet, I hope you'll consider doing so.

I did 2 Xmas at Circuit City for extra cash, and I learned real quick whenever someone walked into my department with a CR, to pass him down to the weeknight high school kids. I lost so many commissions on CR's recommendation to JVC TV's which had the highest commission rate, yet the highest return rate. Those JVCs had a 50% chance of coming back to the store. I'd rather sell 3 Panasonic's or Sony's to get the same commission 1 JVC did knowing that none of the Sony's or Panasonic's would come back. And that's just one example. This si further proof that magazine dedicated to revering products can not be advertiser supported.

Interesting.

Anyway, updated results have been posted for the Patriot. The reported repair rate for the 2007 is close to the average, but that for the 2008 is worse. In both cases sample sizes are just over the minimum; we'd have more precise results with more participants.

WOW Am I the only one with a reliable patriot?

I have enjoyed almost 14000 miles of trouble free operation of my 08 Patriot but the numbers here show one of the worst repair records of any Jeep ever.

If you have a good reliable Patriot speak up! Join the survey and move that needle to a respectable reliability zone that better represents the true Patriot performance!

The numbers for the 2008 are worse than for the 2007. So, unless Chrysler's quality has been affected by recent changes at the company, I suspect that the reported repair rate will improve as more responses are received.

Even that posted number is just below one repair per vehicle per year. So for everyone who has had two repairs in a year, another owner has had none. I post the actual repair rates to hopefully make this clearer than a dot score would.

Finally, remember that this is not a game. The goal is objective, unbiased information. Partly for this reason, people can't report old repairs on the main survey (there's a second survey for people who want to post complete repair histories). The main survey collects data going forward.

20 months and 36,000 trouble free miles in my 07 FDI 5speed. I do all of my own maintenance of course. More reliable than my old HHR (shop serviced), newer Saturn Outlook (recalls galore), and Harley Sportster Custom ( bad voltage regulator/ electrical system shorts). My Patriot in my experience has been the exception to the norm.

Updated results recently posted. Jeep Patriot and Compass reliability, in terms of successful repair trips per 100 vehicles per year:

2007: 55, about average

2008: 72, about average

Additional participants would be helpful, especially for the new 2009. The larger the sample size, the more information we can provide.

This is a really great site and I used it extensively to research other SUV's before I decided on the Patriot. Thanks for the link, I joined!

Diesels are welcome to participate in the main reliability survey. For the others I'm afraid they'll have to wait until I get more non-US powertrains into the database.

This month's survey is the last before the February results. Sample sizes have been around the minimum, so additional participants would be very helpful.

We have updated results for the Jeep Patriot. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2007: 51, about average

2008: 52, about average

Note that, now that we have decent (though still far from large) sample sizes for both years, the results are virtually identical.

A big thanks to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in May, August, and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years, including the 2009. Especially need more 2009s.

We now have a separate results page for each model that includes the results for competitors. The page for the Jeep Patriot:
